How often would you add 10 ounce TECHRON ( $4.94 @ W.M. ) to fill up ? 2 months ? Reason being only non E gas in large radius . Both cars manual state Top Tier gas . The other is E.F.I..

I drive two GDI cars, both with turbos (see signature). I always use gas that contains ethanol an have had NO problems. I only use Top Tier like Shell, Exxon, BP or even Rutters on occasion. No gasoline related issues at all. Be brave. Just use Top Tier.

Don't think I'm understanding the multi-point question, but I'll take a stab.

You're referencing non-ethanol gas when talking about needing to add a fuel system cleaner every 2 months. Non-ethanol gas (the only thing you have available to you in a large radius?) can be top tier, containing the same detergents as E-10 top tier gas. Just buy it from a top-tier supplier.

EFI will benefit more from top-tier and Techron than GDI will, as it actually gets a chance to clean the backs of the intake valves, where it never touches the intake valves in a GDI.

Did I answer your question(s)?

I think the issue at hand is that the non-e gas is only available at a non-TT brand in their area, so Odie was wondering how often to add Techron due to the use of non-e gas that doesn't happen to be TT. I'd say a bottle every 3-4 months should be plenty, but wonder if you'd not be better off using E10 TT at every fill, assuming that the cars don't sit for long periods of time. I think the benefits of E0 are far larger in engines not designed to use E10 (at least several dozen years old for cars) or in engines that sit for long periods (fun cars that may sit the winter or OPE).

For the most part ethanol free fuel is hard to find and when stations have it. it's usually 90 octane recreational gas that's usually not the same brand as the other fuel at the same station.

I run e-10 but ethanol or not. I use a bottle of techron every 5k usually before an oil change. Sometimes I run a tank of b-12, then a tank of techron, then change oil.

I think the issue would be that often this stuff is not specifically authorized for sale by the fuel marketer license and has to be bought on the spot market. As such it's "non-branded" and not subject to Top Tier requirements even if sold at a licensed gas station that's part of Top Tier. I haven't seen E0-90, but I have seen E85 sold that has a sign saying that it's "non-branded".

Interesting. The one ethanol-free pump within a reasonable distance of me is Exxon branded so I guess I've just never seen any other situation.

I've occasionally seen "Not a Shell Fuel Product" on Diesel and E-85 in the midwest (same for BP), but never on E-0 gas here. Our E-0 isn't generally at a separate pump as it often is in the places selling it as Rec 90 or similar (it's almost always just a grade choice at the pump at Casey's, Kum and Go, HyVee, etc, where one or two grades have ethanol and the balance do not).

Many of the stations in the midwest selling E0 aren't TT stations anyway (though some like QT and Kwik Trip are, plus many Shell, Phillips 66, and BP have E-0 premium) so all fuel at such a given station is likely just commodity fuel meeting the EPA detergent minimums regardless of ethanol content, in the cases of many brands here (the aforementioned Casey's, Kum and Go, HyVee, etc.)

Just use top tier e10 and then you don't need the techron. All modern EFI/GDI is designed for it. If I had to chose between something like Shell V-Power and no name ethanol free 90 I'd go with the Shell.

I wish they still sold 90 octane in this area

Only grades now days are 87,88,89,91,93
Sam’s club carries 92

For what I run I don’t need 91+ nor do I need the extra buck a gallon purchase cost

Actually, on some GDI engines such as my 2016 Honda 2.4 Liter, the fuel injector is pulsed on twice if the engine operating conditions are correct for it to do that. Once for a very short time while the intake valve is open so some of its spray gets on some of the back of the intake valve. And also the intake valve rotates some so over time all of its back gets sprayed with gasoline. And of course the main longer opening of the fuel injector when it supplies the remaining fuel required into the compressed air in the cylinder.

Without knowing approximate miles driven for the the interval, any answer would be a guess that was based on not enough data.

Would also use the 88 w/E5 . There's 87 w/E10 as well . Have been using the 90 non E for many years for small engines w/o an issue . Reminder , these are an unknown brand .

Just a FYI, the 90 rec gas has the same amount of detergent additives as 93E10. Yes it's a unbranded product which gets a generic additive package during the loading process. So you may not be getting "Techron", but still getting a generic form of it. Do with this information what you wish.

I need to edit the above. Branded Citgo DOES offer a Top Tier formula 90 Rec gasoline. Loading it as I post this.

Yes , aware of detergent amount same as higher octanes .

You're still getting PEA but they don't call it by a trade name, but most generic unbranded gas is likely not got a top tier level of detergent in it, only EPA minimum while branded top tier fuel will have above the EPA minimum.
