I'm in the market to replace my old Chevy pickup truck.

Of course I'm eyeing another Chevy/GMC truck. Perhaps even a full size van (Express/Savannah). I'm not even going to consider a Dodge or a Ford.

But one non-GM vehicle that has caught my eye is the Nissan Titan 1500 XD. Especially with the 5.0 Cummins Diesel. I'll be using this truck to for many things, but the I need a truck to tow my boat (18' ski boat) and a BMX trailer that I plan to haul all over the country the next 3-6 years.

I haven't seen many reviews on this new 5.0 Cummins. Not much on the truck either. Does anyone here own one? Or have any input. I'm hoping to drive one this weekend.
 
Why sit on the fence?

You can get a really good gas pickup that will take your load, or a much better deal on an American diesel Truck that won't have any of the inferiorities of the Titan.

The Titan XD is nearly as large and every bit as heavy as a diesel 2500.
 
That engine is built in Columbus, Indiana, so you'll be supporting your home state economy if you get the Nissan. Cummins has been engineering on that engine for about 20 years, so one would think that it's pretty well figured out. I saw prototype cylinder heads for it when I first went to work at Eaton in 2002. Cummins had already announced production for the Dodge Ram 1500 back in 2008, but the economy crashed, and so did Chrysler, taking that deal with it. This was a blow to Cummins, who had already refit their downtown Columbus plant to manufacture the engine, but then lost their customer. They did succeed in getting some small contracts to put the engine into some military vehicles, such as re-engining the Humvee. I was happy to see Cummins finally get an OEM application for the V8.

Based on people I know the older generation was a poor choice for any HD kind of work. But they do look good in person.

I didn't know I was sitting on the fence? Of course I could get a gas. I've never owned a diesel, so the idea of experiencing one is intriguing to me. I don't need a diesel for what I'm hauling, I know that. But like I said, I need a truck, trucks are expensive, and I'd rather get a gas GM truck than their diesel offering. But a Cummins, I like that idea, especially if I don't have to buy a Dodge.
 
Looking at the prices I think you could get a much better american truck for the money, also I like the fact that ford/chevy/dodge have been making heavy duty trucks for a long time. There is a big difference between the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton and I am worried that this titan is just a "fancied up" 1/2 ton that wont last. Also the reviews talk about bad gas mileage and lack of power? But you can figure that out when you drive one. I would recommend to try them all and see what you like, you dont buy a truck for an engine you buy it for the whole package.
 
That's what I mean about sitting on the fence. With XD, you're barely above a half ton capacity, all of the weight of a 3/4, and worse fuel economy than any of them.


You would do much better siding with either half ton gas or 3/4 diesel. Otherwise, you're taking all of the demerits and none of the rewards.
 
Since u know about GM trucks, how about a truck w the GM 6.0 or 6.2 L gas engine. Plenty of power for your needs and they are affordable. I don't have any experience w the Titan but I believe it is old technology that needs updating.
 
I'd think the need to tow a boat would rule out the van--4x4 for slippery ramps. Remove slippery ramps and I'd err towards the van, even though engine work is harder, bought new and driven "lightly" (or put better, less miles per year than a commercial user) the van is likely a better fit for work than a truck. Not unless if you need to be able to drop pallets in, seat 4, or drive around with smelly trash in the back.

Regardless, I'd go GM. I'm not a fan of where diesel is sitting at for the moment, you ruled out Ford/Dodge, and I don't think Nissan/Toyota is really competitive.
 
I have seen discounts of 10 to 12 thousand off sticker on the new XDs. It turns out these trucks are a solution to a problem that nobody is asking for an answer for.


If you tow occasionally and use your truck for a daily driver-a regular half-ton truck is the best solution. If you tow frequently-a 3/4 ton truck or better is the solution.

So this means Nissan is looking for buyers of a truck that doesn't have the payload of a heavy-duty truck.

However-it is a buyers market for the Nissan XDs and this is the upside of the whole situation.

It's clear no one here has test driven an XD. The towing reviews are quite good. There is a reason it weighs as much as it's true 3/4 ton competition. It is much more a 3/4 ton truck than a 1/2 ton truck. People want to rag it for the price, yet fully loaded 1/2 tons such as F150 Platinums, Silverado's 1500's GMC's Etc all exceed 60k on the sticker with even less real world capability. Loaded trucks are expensive no matter what chassis configuration you go with.

Some people desire a ride that is better than the HD trucks. That is why the XD has a lower payload rating. Something has to give so it is sprung more softly than the HD trucks, but still heavier than the 1/2 ton trucks.

Many of the 1/2 ton trucks are claiming 11,000, and 12,000lb max towing these days on paper, but in the real world the Heavier XD is a far better platform for handling 12k vs any other 1/2 ton truck. It can handle it's max everyday without too much fuss, and provide superior stability at speed, and braking than the 1/2 ton competition. The Cummins XD has the Aisin 6 speed Auto from the Ram 3500. The truck was built with heavier use in mind.

That being said I would probably skip the Cummins, and go with the well proven, and strong Gas 5.6 mated to Nissan's 7 speed auto. As expected with 1st year models the Cummins equipped trucks have had a few issues. The XD is not the best choice for everyone, and Nissan isn't expecting it to be a high volume truck, but it's certainly a nice option in a field of very nice trucks across the board.

I've been behind the wheel of both Ford and GM half tons while towing a bit over 12k. It's not as incompetent of a haul as you might think. Very comfortable, actually.

I'd put good money on an air ride equipped Ram 2500 clobbering the Titan XD in both towing and ride quality.

I have in fact test driven the XD. My impression was, "Why not get a 3/4 ton?".

The half tons beat it at the half tons game by a wide margin, and the 3/4 tons beat it at the 3/4 ton game by a wide margin. It's the ultimate example trying to do two things at the same time, and doing neither well.

You reminded me of this comparison...having bags on these trucks makes a big difference with any appreciable weight:

Not true at all. The 1/2 tons do NOT beat it by a wide margin. If you think that can you tell us how exactly?

Like I said. The half tons have it beat at the half tons game.
