It sounded like an albatross for Cummins. Maybe FCA could have picked it up for the Ram 1500 but that would cannibalize Ram 2500 CTD sales as well. I can see the ISV being speced by UPS for their trucks which I think are built on a Workhorse or Morgan Olson platform, but UPS has been using GM powertrains lately. I've seen a Cummins ISB 4-cylinder peek out from a UPS truck a few times.

Didn't Chrysler back-out of a deal for a V8 Cummins that was slated for the Ram 1500.....And FCA decided to use the VM 3.0L that was originally designed for GM??

Large fleets are trying to avoid Diesel as much as possible,The GM 6.0L/6L90E has proven itself in Isuzu NPR/GM Workhorse chassis' for a decade now & the 6.0L/4L80E combo before that.

I don't see where a ISV is better suited for a Step/Straight Van than a ISB, Does the ISV really get better fuel economy than a ISB?
Kinda surprised Grumman/Olsen didn't follow the "Glider" loophole & offer pre-emissions 5.9L ISB's......Interesting subject nonetheless. Sorry for the off topic responses, Not really feeling the whole "Let's bash a brand"

The Chrysler/Cummins relationship on the ISB is special & recreating it would be tough. Ford/Navistar was close 'til the 6.0L/6.4L debacle happened. And the GM/Isuzu never had any surrounding mystique.....Though the Duramax has matured into a good engine & save for the LB7 injector issues, LLY cooling issues, & LML pump issues, The base architecture is as sound as any.

Of coarse the same could be said about the Ford 6.0L.....When fixed/updated/modified correctly.

Chrysler and Cummins had a deal in 2008 to put the 5L V8 diesel in the Ram 1500, but bankruptcy and the Fiat takeover scotched that one. Since Fiat owns Iveco, it even called into question the ISB continuing in the HD Ram. Iveco has engines in that same size range, but Cummins' ISB is now encoded in the Ram DNA.

RAM was looking to put in a V8 Cummins with either the 2008 or 2009 model year RAM 1500's. When the market crash and recession hit in 2008 and with then Ceberus Capital Management running Chrysler at the time and facing bankruptcy, that got shelved. Also, that V8 Cummins was developed for pre DEF and DPF emissions standards.

When FCA a few years later looked at bringing a diesel to the 1500 again, the previous V8 Cummins they had invested in would not meet the new DEF/DPF emissions in a reasonable time frame and went to look for something more off the shelf and that is where the VM 4.0 motor came.

Supposedly what is in the current Nissan Titan for their Cummins V8 traces it's design genesis back to the stalled RAM project of 2008 time frame.

Honda is average.

Toyota and Lexus are simply brilliant. 25 years old Camry is miles better than a new Ghibli or a 5 series.

+1, pretty well sums it up.

Yup +2

Over the years I've seen Camry being recommended in various, totally not related threads, like the Dodge Hellcat thread, but the guy did recommend a V6 Camry, so I guess it's OK

There's a bit of an interesting twist - the current Duramax 2.8L I4 GM uses is an VM Motori design, not an Isuzu design. Detroit Diesel before GM sold it to Penske was working with VM Motori on smaller diesel engines, maybe for light trucks, or to compete against Perkins/Yanmar/Kubota? Who knows...

P.S. I do believe if any style copying was being done, Nissan was likely aping the #1 selling pickup truck in America ...

Ummm... yup. One does. I have been known, recently, to stare at my truck in admiration.

The 90's were their best decade. The Maxima had the most power in its class, Pathfinders were like tanks and Altimas were reliable.

The Frontier is the only Nissan still worth a look IMO. And that is largely due to the fact that it has been around so long without any significant change. The next gen Frontier is likely doing to be a major disappointment.
