A moose is the meanest creature in the wilderness.
I always heard it was the polar bear (ha-ha...."they're always laying on fat and will always find room for you")

Seriously, I heard from Canadians that a moose can walk past you on one day and simply decide to kill you the next.

The other expression I heard was, "Any day you don't see a moose is a good day." I think that one is vehicle oriented.
 
What part of the state @bigjohn ? Up near Red Feather?
Grand Mesa, outside of Grand Junction on the western slope. The Moose that were located here decades ago where a Forest/Timber variety, not the nasty big dudes from Canada. It's a smaller sub-species. But as of this year, the Parks and Wildlife say the population on the Mesa has now grown to 400 animals.
