NHRA cuts race distance to 1000 feet

I can have my say by not purchasing a ticket and thus not putting money into NHRA's coffers. Maybe more people will think the same.

thanks for getting your point across.

I hope that the decision of these entertainers pays off for them

I'm a weekend bracket racer and there are no 1/4 mile tracks here. Just a 500 foot track an 1/8 mile and a 1000 foot track. The run is basically over in the first 330 feet on any of the tracks.

Nitro engines do sound good at idle but a 600 hp Race Hemi turning 8,000 sounds just as good.Plus you can watch a '65 Hemi race somewhere other than under NHRA's Retard Rules.

Sorry to hear that Steve. Enjoy it while you can. Next year, nhra(I refuse to capitalize the name,it implies respect for none of which I have)will probably be down to running the eighth-mile.

SAD but true... As someone who has followed Drag racing for well over 35 years it looks like they are going to kill it off.

The board members of the Professional Racers Owners Organization (PRO) wholeheartedly and unanimously support this decision,” said its president Kenny Bernstein. “We want to thank NHRA for listening to our input and suggestions to incorporate these changes. It is not lost on any of us that this constitutes a change in our history of running a quarter-mile, but it's the most immediate adjustment we can make in the interest of safety which is foremost on everyone's mind. This may be a temporary change and we recognize it is not the total answer. We will continue to work hand in hand with NHRA to evaluate other methods of making Top Fuel and Funny Car competition safer so that we might return to our quarter-mile racing standard. We also want to thank Connie Kalitta for his invaluable input. He has been a rock through these difficult times.”

Of course they support it. While it does little for safety it decreases their costs. They're looking at how many top end engine failures they won't have to pay for if they change the length to 1000 FT.

And the tracks can avoid spending $$ this way too since there is already timing equipment in place at 1000 FT.

Meanwhile, the FANS, the people that actually pay the bills are not happy. Unhappy fans will cost them a lot more ultimately than the more complicated and expensive changes they probably should make.

You guys are wrong in thinking the fans will not like it.
Most honest drag racing fans (like myself) want to see the pro classes run safe and going to a 1000' is only an interum plan.

I've seen death...and I would rather see a shorter run if it means I can talk to the driver later in the day. :)

The cost of racing is getting higher and higher for the Pro classes and as for some of the tracks... they can not increase their shut down area as is the case with English Town. There is a highway at the end of the track. This is only one reason as there are many more.
It just boggles the mind how some on here are ready to ditch the idea that NHRA has proposed.
Why not come up with your own and send it in. :)

If the track can't safely accommodate 1/4 mile, maybe they shouldn't be there in the 1st place.

Good Point. Go back to a quarter-mile and boot all the tracks that can't accomodate a real event. If that means dumping E-Town and Pomona then so be it. I'll never watch it again. If I want to see eighth-mile drag racing I'll go watch the little kids run Jr. Dragsters.

Shannow ...and your adding what to this?
I'm just saying that the idea is only an interum.
Did you guys not read that.
NHRA and the owners/drivers will come up with something.

As for the tracks that are to short.
These tracks were built mostly in the 60's.
200mph was not a big deal then.

For those that will never watch again....I hear crickets in the back ground.

Count me in with those crickets then because I was raised on quarter-mile drag racing and will accept nothing less. I have a local IHRA track that will soon be getting a national event so I need the nhra like I need a hole in the head. Screw Bernstein and the rest of them.

There was quite a reasonable discussion of alternatives, before you stepped in and shut down conversation with "they don't care"

How about doing a NASCAR on them and cutting down the motor displacement to 360 cubic inches " what ever the original Hemi displacement was".
