Hi all,

Great list and love the enthusiasm. I thought that between BMW club and woodworking I had pretty much topped the areas to occupy my time, glad I kept searching.

Anyway, I have been using Mobil 1 0w-40 in the following cars.

95 E36 M3 65k miles on it- used for track events and have seen oil temps in the 250 F at the top of the engine.

99 A6 avant 86k miles- daily driver 66 miles round trip

I use the recommended Mobil 1 5w-30 in the mini and sububan

05 Mini Cooper S 20k - daily driver 50 miles round trip

01 Suburban 2500 8.1L 79k - tow vehicle for the M.

Given all the above and the recent discussions around M1 using group III base stock what are the best recommendations to switch to what brand and weights given their uses.

I appreciate all and any help as I have just figured out that this forum knows more about oil than I have the time to learn.

Rob

5W30 for all, I'd say. Although, the Cooper Mini may spec 5W20. Pennzoil Platinum. 7500 mile OCI, OEM, WIX, Bosch, or PureOne filter replacement every other OCI. The trackside special, I'd run some form of HDEO or Redline in. The Suburban, in summertime towing trim probably needs a blend of some kind to get some AW additive in the V-8 via direct add, or a blend of syn and some HDEO added to the mix.

You'll be well-served. Hang on for a few more weeks, I'd bet Advanced Auto will open up another 2-4-1 sale on the Pennzoil Platinum/Quaker State versions.

So, uhmm, how quick IS that Cooper Mini "S"?

to BITOG!
I'd say if you are satisfied with Mobil 1, why change? Are you looking for something better, want to extend oil change intervals, looking for something just as good for less money?

For the Audi & Mini(Mann) and the BMW(Mahle) filters. They seem to have ,for Euro cars, good products.

So would the 5w-30 could be Pennzoil, Redline or Amsoil?

" The Suburban, in summertime towing trim probably needs a blend of some kind to get some AW additive in the V-8 via direct add" Can you please explain this? sorry still trying to catch up on all the acronyms.

And the track car should get what? "I'd run some form of HDEO or Redline in" As a side note, I ran Amsoil 10w-30 in that car and used a quart of oil at the track and went back to 0w-40. I wouldn't mind heavier as the manual recommends a mineral oil of up to 50 in the summer.

The mini s is pretty fast to be honest. It handles like a go kart even with the #@$%! tires they provide with it. Extended driving at high speeds are a bit boring though, its got nothing above 110mph, being a rounded brick and all.

thanks for the reply

Thanks for the welcome.

I change the oil at 5k no matter what in the daily's the track car is changed after 2-3 track events which included driving to and from. The burban is new to me as of last week. Don't want extendend intervals just want the best protection available within reason. If I can push these out a little that would be good as well I guess.

Rob - sounds like you would be a good candidate for AMSOIL's full synthetic group III XL7500 mile line. Just change your oil every 6 months or 7500 severe miles which ever comes first. I've always heard good things about these products here at BITOG. You can use any filter you wish. These are Amsoil's lowest priced oils, they will be shipped to your door, and the site sponsors here will help you get the lowest price possible. Plus you'll be doing your part to sponsor BITOG. No oil additives needed nor recommended. Free parts and labor warranty should the oil ever fail.

The AMSOIL site recommends these products for your specific vehicles:

1995 BMW M3 3.0L 6-cyl Engine Code S50 = XL 5W30
1995 AUDI A6 2.8L 6-cyl Engine Code AAH = AMO 1040 . This one is more expensive but will last longer. You might call AMSOIL at Technical Support (715) 399-TECH to see if they will recommend one of the XL oils for you. Hopefully the XL 5W30 so you just need to stock one oil.
2005 MINI COOPER 1.6L 4-cyl Engine Code W11 = XL 5W30
2001 CHEVROLET TRUCKS SUBURBAN 8.1L 8-cyl Engine Code G = XL 5W30.

Hope this helps.

Are all of Amsoil PAO and the diff in their product line strictly add packages to extend drain interval?

It would be nice to stock one in the cabinet

First, I doubt you'll see any difference switching to another brand, simply bc all oils are good. M1's problem isn't bc they use Group III, something I wish people would get off of. The problem is the formulation just isn't as good as it should be for $6-$7qt. They still use PAO although as a correction fluid. You're best bet for the $$ would be Havoline, PP or Amsoil (for full synthetic).

Allow me to clarify. The XL line is a group III oil. As buster says nothing wrong with that and as Tim says, the product is excellent. I'm tempted to recommend the Amsoil ASL 5W-30 PAO/ester formulation in place of the XL mentioned above.

I also drive a MINI Cooper S. Like you, I was running M1 5w-30 but recently switched to GC. The engine seems to like it and the slightly thicker oil might be a plus...MINI's tend to have low oil pressure at idle as well as high oil temps when pushing it.

Pablo,

by nature I am a person who over builds and over analyzes everything, so bear with me.

Do you think the 5w-30 is enough for my BMW? I would feel more comfortable with a higher weight given the high revs it sees at the track. I also noticed that this particular selection doesn't mention is has VW or bmw long life approval.

I look at it like this, even if I am throwing good used oil away I don't care, I want the area under the curve to have substaintial margins for my application.

thanks for the insights. How does one order Amsoil anyway?

This is why I use the 0w-40 in the summer in that car. Since the mobil 5w-30 is a thin 30. sorry I was basing the info per car on recent changes for the winter. Actually going to change oil today in this wonderous cold weather we are having up here today.

I agree with you on the M3. I think you need an XW-40 in there. I think the AMO 10W-40 mentioned above is a perfect match. It will be fine even on your cold mornings. (Very close to a 5W-40) Amsoil is not big on certifications. I can tell you that the 10W-40 can easily meet the LL requirements, but in a 1995 car, warranty probably isn't your biggest concern - protecting from wear probably is. The AMO 10W-40 has a good old fashioned additive package with modern PAO/ester base oils.

To order just call 800-956-5695 or web order with the links I gave above - be sure to use my number #515729

So the pricing is as listed on the website? Is there a discount for quantity. I'll probably be ordering gear oils and tranny oils for the same set of cars too.

Has anyone seen the most recent virgin (VOA-forum) on Synergy 3W-30?

If you wanted to use the same oil in all these applications, I think the ACEA, A3/B3 rated, Series 3000, 5w-30 would work. It's a tad thin for an older European motor, but both of yours have low miles and should have very little wear. It has about the same working viscosity as the Mobil 1, 0w-40 (a HT/HS of 3.5 Cp, vs 3.6 Cp for the 0w-40), but will be much more shear stable. The Series 3000 will do everything the regular Amsoil 5w-30 or 10w-30 will do in gas engine applications and the add pack is even more robust.

I had excellent results running the 0w-30 and 5w-30 Amsoil formulations in my older Audi 100, up until I had about 175k on the engine. At that point I went to their 10w-40 and sometimes even their 20w-50 racing oil for very hot weather (I'm down here in dixie).
