New tool thread

Ive found the ratings on many of these tools to be over optimistic, and, all bets are off when things are a bit chemically seized or whatnot…

Doing ball joints this past weekend, the lower joint nut had a torque spec of 80nm, and my 250ft-lb (339nm) M12 stubby couldn’t break it. My bigger m18 knocked it free no problem. I’d encountered the same with corroded lug bolts in the past, even with higher rated electric impact guns.
I have found this to be more true with electric impacts than pneumatic, but then again, pneumatic impacts have a huge variable - incoming line pressure. A lot of folks run waaaay over the recommended 90 psi!

New TONE baby 1/4" ratchet straight from Japan (I couldn't say no at $25) and the ABN copy of the Tite Reach "extension wrench"

I run mine at 120-150 psi at the larger gun, 1/2 hose and all the CFM it can take. I don't care if I blow it up (never have), I need it to get the job done, I don't really abuse the tools but they don't get babied either.

I simply got sick of dealing with regulators (but, ARO will do that to you) and just run straight off the 80 gal compressor.

I've had zero problems and love the simplicity. To be fair I use very few air tools these days. Mostly I just use air to blow off chips at the machine tools and inflate tires....er and it's nice for seating tubeless tires on bikes :D

That unfortunately wont work for me as I do a lot of painting that takes a lot of treated air, I split my system in 2 channels oil air high pressure and low pressure filtered and cooled air and use different hoses and fittings for both.

You can't beat the size/power ratio of a 3/8" stubby impact like the Matco MT2748.
Also, I have found that pneumatic vacuum brake bleeders do better with 80-90psi of inlet pressure.....not sure why.

Picked up this Modis today for $300

Updated thru '14 which - honestly-- probably covers 70% of what I service....although with each passing year that is less and less true.

It needs a battery of course but fires up on AC

BUT I didn't really want it for reader/scanner capabilities. I've always thought this seems like a decent way to get into a scope for not too much coin....?

What say the collective? Reasonable, or bad idea and terrible deal? I'm open to any opinions, not seeking positive affirmation

I cut my teeth on a Snapon Modis and still have 2. There are some quirks to a snapon scope that you dont notice when its all you have ever used but are quite annoying to go back to after using a PC based scope. The biggest quirk with a snapon scope is you cant zoom in, you can only zoom out. To effectively capture a waveform to analyse you have to capture at a very short time base (I use 10 milliseconds) then zoom out to see the overall trends or to see a full rotation of the crankshaft or similar.

I’ve been wanting a 1/4 high speed extended reach for a long time. I have a original 3/8 version that I use with a 1/4 adaptor on it most of the time. I impulse bought it (maybe it’s not a impulse if it’s been in your mind for months?) along with one of the new 2.5 HO battery’s.

I haven’t used it yet so I can’t make a actual opinion on it but after first impressions I’m not sure what to think to be honest. It’s heavier than I expected and the balance isn’t as good as the original. Seems the extended head is really beefy.

Only time will tell.

I really like my 1/4”. Perfect balance of reach, size and torque. But the 3/8 is just too weak; I know they prioritized speed over torque, but there just isn’t enough torque IMO. I’m keeping my eyes out for a CTR867.

Shockingly, Bezos had the best price:

They are replacing these terrible things:

I dunno, I've got the GW's but with a red stripe and one pair has a noticeable twist. I can't capture it in pictures but in person it's very noticeable.

That said, they work ok. I just believe GW is barely a step above bottom of the barrel in general, but they're inexplicably overrated and flaws or failures are forgiven where they wouldn't be for other similarly priced brands.

That said, I hope they serve you well!

I have had shockingly good experiences with 2013-18 era Gearwrench tools, regardless of COO. This is my first Gearwrench purchase in a long time. Honestly, it wasn’t my first choice of brand, but all of the hose grip plier options were extremely similar and from China.
