New "red label" syntec 0W-30

Went to GC this oil change, and bought five quarters earlier in the week. However, after I went with a higher capacity filter, I ended up a bit short. Went back to Auto Zone to get a top-off quart, went to the rack, sorted through the yellow label Syntex 0W-30 until I got a red label, and bought it. Wasnt until I got home that I saw the made in Germany was missing, and the list of specs that it met was decidedly shorter. I compared the empties, and yes, they were all the German version and so stated on the back of the bottle, right above the UPC code. When I took it back, I compared the yellow labled version with the new, red labeled, "USA" version and they appeared to be identical. Looks suspiciously like a red labeled version of the yellow label product. Did I miss something, or is this a CASTROL shell game to fool even the BITOG regulars by just changing label colors on the US stuff? (P.S. Got to tell you, first time in my life I went back to exchange a quart of oil, but the AZ guys did it, and, I got to tell them about the BITOG site in the process, and that yes, there is a difference in Syntex products of the same viscosity).

Yes, you missed something...the red labeled American stuff appeared after Old Yeller but before the red labeled German. I love it the way groupthink has got SO MANY PEOPLE on this board OH SO READY to find something nefarious in anything that appears out of the ordinary with Castrol.

Hehe yup, i just saw some of this "middle" stuff day before yesterday. Also ended up buying some of the newest stuff with the bp logo on the back, i posted some pics for those interested here.

Looks promising, i also spoke with a castrol guy and he told me that the stuff will not go away unless the formula slx is discontinued (which it is NOT, it is still made and used in shops in europe) or in the case that there is no demand for it....

There must be years if not decades of the old stuff still in the system. If the GC goes away I bet we'll still be seeing the Made in USA variety around for our lifetimes...

The SLX doesn't HAVE to go away...at least not for quite a while...if you build a nice little "account" in your "oil bank."

That's what I'm doing!

I buy one liter per week to add to my supply.

I was just over 50 this morning, but just used up 4 on my mom's oil change. But I did buy one more liter this afternoon from Walmart too.

So I'll have to do an inventory check, but I believe I'm almost at 50. I'll be getting a C5 Corvette in a week or two, so I'll be using up another 7L of my stash too.

I just took an inventory, exactly 50 liters. It's all arranged nicely, seperating the newest batch from my older batch supply. I am going to be using up the older batch first (although my wife's car is currently running some of the newest batch)

Well, it's actually UP a W E E bit more now...really just a W E E bit.

PS You'd think Castrol could at least make me an honorary CEO or something...and the Patster could be my honorary VP of Canadian operations...or something

I like the sounds of that! Heck, I'd just like to get paid a percentage of all the sales of GC that have happened based on my recommendations to someone.

I think they should start making "Scratch 'n Siff" labels for this stuff! Then we'd know what we're buying! The smell is EXACTLY like the Harley Davidson oil I used to buy for my 1976 Super Glide...it had NO moly because of the wet clutch, but it sure smelled good. Come to think of it, quite a few things smelled good back then.

Just take a little black light with you and shine it on the bottle, the green makes it glow in blue/black light

I got a lot of catching up with you guys, I just put this stuff in my LT1, it sure does like it, thanks for the recommendation Pat

cweed,

Not necessary to catch up (unless you just want to); just enjoy the Fellowship of the Green (is there a JRR Tolkien/Peter Jackson trilogy in here somewhere?) You know...The Two Litres and Return of the Green...rated GC.

I keep running down to my local Autozone looking for the GC. All they have is the yellow label product. Manager at store looks at me kinda strange when I try to explain the difference between the two types.
