So I think I've finally found my forever oil (until I do more research on that new VRP stuff). I behold to you:

Pennzoil Platinum Euro LX 0W30

which is also apparently the same as my local Quaker State 0W30, and at Canadian tire there exists another bottle of OE packaged oil at 0w30 that also claims to be this pennz. I will never not have access to this oil.

HTHS of around 3.5, kv100 of 11.8ish before breakdown (should stay in spec even in a turbod application for dailying), kv40 of 60ish(wowee), a GTL base which is the best thing I've seen on shelves?, 5800ish cp @ -35C(0w rated), and as far as ratings go it's specced at MB .52, PORSCHE C30, VW507, etc. Basically everything my cute little knowledge base of oils could want want my applications spec is 5w30 ACEA a5b5.
I tried PUP 5w30 and just... didn't like the way the engine clacked at me. Sounded much better on M1 FS 0w40 when I tried it.

Hate on my choice. Tell me why it's dumb and why a boutique ester is the way to go, educate me :) might take a while tho..

PP Euro LX is same as Motomaster Euro 0w-30, both are German made, QS Euro LX is US made. All are great and I tried all 3, German oil felt better to me. One thing I noticed when running these oils in GDI engine is the oil gets black quick, PP and PUP did it too thou. Lately running on M1 ESP 5w-30 and liking it better, it doesn't go black quickly either.
Specs wise M1 ESP is marginally better but not enough to justify significant price difference when both are at full price.

Yeah, I came to the same conclusion for the Outback, its available nearby and goes on sale often enough, and I feel ok if I stretch the odd OCI before its convenient to do a change.

So you think. Stick around here long enough and you'll find another forever oil. :)

I agree. I stuck around long enough to finally figure out that the best oil is a shorter OCI. ;) which is what i had been doing previously before joining bitog except that I was a dino guy then and now a Syn snob. lol

At least until further notice ... and as long as the oil meets the minimum requirements!

Some may call it KISS principle!

I'm sure that's gonna get under some people's skin! 🤣

Not hating your choice. But after deciding to move away from clatter PUP 5w30 and then use Mobil-1 0w40 - which you appeared to like, why another change to PUP 0w30?

Being you're in Canada, you may have thought the 0w40 was too thick for Canadian winters. In that case, do what I have done many times and blend a quart or two of Mobil-1 EP 0w20 with your 0w40.

I've been blending for over 50 years. No complaints yet.

Op,

What's the diff between 0W-30 and its cousin Euro L 5W-30 as far as approvals and have you looked into that?

I used to buy the 5W-30 at Wal-Mart on sale for $22.xx iirc but no longer see it at my local store. It also has a bunch of Euro approvals and it's a C3 ... very price friendly when on sale and the engines sounded very smooth! ;)

I don't mind snatching a 5W or 0W-30 on sale for our GDI.

I used the Pennzoil Euro LX 0w30 in one of my B48 engines (a JCW Countryman) and did a UOA on it. Seemed to hold up perfectly fine for 5000 miles....probably would have been good for another 5K.

This would seem to make a lot of sense for you . Also the M1 0W40 FS does sheer down into being a 30 weight oil somewhat quickly as I believe it’s at the lower end of the 40 weight scale . The M1 0W30 ESP at WM for $27 per 5 qrt. jug is another potential option with a number of Euro ratings .

PP Euro LX 0W30 is my exclusive oil for my Benz.

I have been using PP for all of my cars since 2015 after trying almost everything else.

Best base oil. Best additives. Best performance.
