I just traded my old 02 mustang gt in for a 2015 fiesta st.

For those of you that have them, are they hard on oil? Because
It specs for 5w20 which I would think is very light for a 1.6 turbo gdi
Would you guys suggest a jump to 5w30?
My driving is moderately aggressive and I commute 100 miles a day.
Which is heavy traffic in the afternoon but all highway

I own a 2017 Fiesta. I stay with 5w-20 just because my Fiesta is still under warranty. With a turbo and an agressive 100 mile commute, I think you are an IDEAL candidate to use 5w30. Remember, 5w-20 is just a CAFE spec.

Other countries are showing a 5w30 spec for this engine so it is not a xw20 only engine. If you want to run it while in warranty that's up to you but it will not cause any issues.

So is 5w30....

For OP, I'd use Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20 when on rebate as it's PAO based...

I see a lot of people think its necessary to move to a higher weight than 0W-20 or 5W-20. I have used these oils for many years in different vehicles
and have not had any problems at all. My old 05 Ford F-150 had 215,000 miles on it and didn't use any oil when I sold it. I would wait until you have a problem
before you create a new problem. Ford engineers get paid plenty to study what is the best oil for a specific vehicle.

I really want a Fiesta ST but they are a little out of my price range. Is it fast? How does it handle?

I'd like a fast car that handles well, but I also want a light FWD car so I can still drive fast in the winter.

What is the big whoop with PAO ?

I was going to ask the same thing. I guess it's too cold?

Shocking that the person from south Dakota that is frozen solid 6 months out of the year has no use for a 30 weight oil. But the guy that lives in the hottest state, and will experience 115 degree temps, probably does.

I'd ABSOLUTELY run a synthetic 5W30 in that engine, in Arizona. Why? Because it hurts nothing. Not a darn thing. And it does offer better protection, in higher temps, especially if the engine over heats or has some other problem.

A 30 weight shears to a 20 weight. Class, what does a 20 weight shear to?

Run that engine for 300K miles on 5W30 vs 5W20 in Arizona and I am absolutely 100% certain that the engine that was ran on 30 weight oil will have less wear, and timing chains in better condition with less stretch and wear.

Did you run 5w20 or 5w30 in your 4.6 2v GT?

Are you gonna drive your fiesta st like a fiesta ST?

I'd run 5w30, particularly if euro specs 5w30 for that same engine.

FYI Ford dropped from 5w30 to 5w20 on the 99-04 mustangs for CAFE.

In Arizona, I'll run the 30 weight every time. Especially in a sporty fun turbo meant to be driven like a hooligan.

If you are tunning stock tune a 20 weight should be fine. If you are worried about it run redline or amsoil. If you go for a cobb tune or turbo swap a 30 weight would then be ideal.

I came very close to buying a new Fiesta ST a few years ago; unfortunately, I couldn't find a car equipped with Recaros and without a hole in the roof. If I didn't already have the Clubman an ST would be at the top of my list for my DD.

I have done a few used oil analysis on mine with a 20, 30, and 40 weight. Just from the used oil analysis I don't think they're hard on oil. I think you should consider a 0W-40 like Castrol Edge or Mobil 1 for your climate.

Most recent UOA with all three.

I am running that now for the winter OCI in mine.

For a hard driven, Arizona based FiST, I would go with a PAO/POE based full synthetic 5w30 every time, and maybe even a 0W-40 in their dead of summer for an ST driven like it was meant to be.

I run the Ravenol DXG 5w30 (a PAO/POE base stock, formulated for anti-LSPI, lower calcium/sodium, but still high anti-wear/anti-friction add pack, D1G2 oil) in the summer, and although it can stay near 100*F here for weeks at a time, it is NOTHING at all like what happens in the southwest in the summer!!

They are surprising little cars, and about the most unsung/under-rated (by the general import nameplate/SUV road tank buying ONLY public) hot hatches ever made.

I got mine down to UNDER 2600 lbs. without even adding any co$tly, light weight, carbon fiber replacement bits, which makes it quite quick even with the factory 200 ponies turbo/tune.

This thing is just about as 'tossable' as the '83 A1 (Mk 1 to you) GTI I owned new back then, but MUCH quicker, and more stable (lower cg, much better aero) at speed.

The factory bottom end can handle a hybrid/big turbo setup, up to ~375 WHP reliably, but I would suggest a good limited slip diff at that level (I plan on getting one BEFORE any real power upgrades anyway).

These things dominate H/Street autocross class with just good 200 tread wear stickies on a light 16x7 wheel, and Koni Sport dampers, but are shockingly great handlers right off of the showroom floor.

I came from a road course prepped, LS1 Z28, and I am still impressed by this little rally rocket, 3 years later!

I purposely ordered mine without the Recaros (for MANY/multiple reasons, not the least of which was an implicit distrust of Recaro from past aftermarket experiences with them

).
I figured that I could always put a great set of aftermarket recliners OR racing shells in it for the same, or at a lower cost than the Recaro package.

Make sure there is not a supplement manual just for the ST. I used to have a Focus ST and it came with a manual for the regular Focus that called for 5w20 but there was an additional manual just for the ST model and it called for 5w30.
Edit: Found it and it calls for 5w20 as well.
Fiests ST Supplement Manual
