Happy Thanksgiving. I finally got the new F-350 I ordered back in September of last year. This is my first pickup and first diesel. I usually break in all of my gas vehicles and do the first oil change at 1k and then again at 5k to flush everything out. Is this necessary on a diesel? I know it can’t hurt but I’m just curious on everyones thoughts about this. Also, Advance Auto has Mobil Delvac Extreme 10W-30 on sale. Is this a good oil for this engine? I will not be towing heavy but I will make trips to the Home Depot and long road trips to Florida with cargo in the bed. This is more of a toy for me than a work truck.

One statement and a question I would drain the first oil by the 2,000 mile mark to flush out breakin particles unless you don't plan on keeping it very long. Question - does the truck fit in the garage ? Nice Truck

Thanks. I plan on keeping it. I’m not big on getting rid of a good vehicle. I tried and it was really tight. I plan on building a detached garage in a few years.

Nice ride!
As it is parked outside, it would be a tempting target for car thieves.
Any thoughts on additional security?
Something like....Air tags, steering wheel lock, pull a relay or two (fuel pump/starting circuit), keys in a faraday pouch, other?
It can always be towed away, but the size of it would make it a bit more difficult.
Always backing it in and setting parking brake would be good too.

Thanks. I haven’t looked into any of that yet but it’s definitely worth investing into it. I thanks for the tips.

I think swapping out w/new fluid at 1k could work great. Also 10w-30 w/F1 Specification should suffice if it's just used like a 1/2 ton easy work.

LONNNNGGGGG Bed!
Figured they quit offering them on Super Crew cabs/SRW trucks.

They still make them this way. I think it looks better than the shorty.

More usable space. Short beds gained in popularity. Lately I've seen many more Ram Dually short beds that I often chuckle to the wife about. Then I make excuses for them like "maybe they need it to fit in their garage". 😄 ;)

Change your oil every 3-5k

Dont let it idle like an old diesel

Use a fuel additive like Power Service, use the recommended amount per gallon, at every oil change

Drive it hard.
I would add.....keep the DEF fluid above 75% at all times, top off at every fill up, dont let it live on empty. It kills the heater in the tank

I wouldn't top off in climates where the fluid could freeze in the fill tube. The manual specifically recommends against it.

SOP for my truck is to wait until the gauge hits 1/2, then add 2.5 gallons. That guarantees the fill pipe isn't filled. (The DEF heater can't prevent freezing in the tube.) In summer, go all the way until the nozzle clicks.

That is a great suggestion. I wonder what the average freezing temp of cat pee is?
