about to buy a new Peugeot 307. It's a 1.6 liter 4 cyl engine at about 110 hp. Now to the oil part: Info says service every 30000km/18000mi or two years! Ouuuuh. Is that smart? Or should I make an "inbetween" change myself? It has a three year total warranty, fwiw

Is this another one of those 'Extended Drain' threads?

If it gets cold where you are (lol), you might consider one or two in-between oil changes. I know I would. I consider a car a big investment and oil changes are not very expensive.

sometimes, Sweden gets cold

, but I seldom see lower than -20 C in Stockholm. The cars have block heaters that I use when below 0 C when possible.
I will change oil early during break in, and then halfways to the next scheduled service. Would that be enough?

18,000 miles devided by 6 would be about right; especially since a 1.6L probably only holds 4 quarts. I would say sure to 18,000 miles if you were driving a Volvo truck that holds about 42 quarts.

merkava, what do you mean? Should I go with 3k oci?

Seriously, maybe the Peugeot people push the oci too far to be able to say that the car is cheap to maintain, but do they push it 6 times too far? Not likely.

I have personally installed two European imported Volkswagen diesel engines into cars here in the USA. Both engines were removed from wrecked, modern, maintained cars.

Removal of the oil pan on both engines showed excessive carbon and sludge build-up in the belly of the pan. Oil pick-up screens were both clean and filter housing were also clean. The deposits obviously form and settle out of suspension during the 130,000 KM which both engines had (approximately).

Based on my personal observation I would definitely change the oil at approximately 12,000 KM - 16,000 KM.

Those 30,000 KM drain intervals are not in the owners long-term interest.

There is a Amsoil distributor somewhere in Sweden....supposedly is not very active. I cannot fathom that....given the intervals, the low dollar, etc......Do a search, perhaps.

Merkava, thanks for the input. By the way, don't get me wrong, I too think 30kkm is a stretch and I did think it was sooo much that I wanted to know more.
The engine holds only 3.8 liters of oil. Not much.
Maybe 15kkm is also too much so I will do them at maybe 10kkm instead. That interval have worked well for my previous cars, BMW and Volvo so it would probably be ok for this one. I do the Jeep twice a year (~8k) but the Peg will be driven much more.

I would really like to know what oils were used in those VW diesels ! My experience of VW dealers is that they haven't got a clue about correct oils . Three years after VWoA sent out a letter requiring synthetic oil in the model VW I have my local dealers still think its a joke !

Some of the VW diesels had 50 000 km OCI.. Maybe it was one of those

All European/Japonese/USA/Mexico cars sold in Europe has OCI of at least 15 000 km/1 year. Most common is 30 000 km/2 year OCI (Ford, Opel, BMW, Audi, VW, Seat, Skoda, MB, etc ). Those are maximum values as all of these cars has OLM.

Oil with VW 506.01 or VW 507.00 can work up to 30 000 km/2 years, if the conditions are right. All VW/Audi/MB/BMW/etc. with long OCIs use OLM.

I have a '05 (GM) Opel Astra 1.8 (Gasoline). It has OCI of 30 000 km/years. I did my first change at 3000 km, then at 8 000 and at 18 000 km. Now I do 15 000 km OCI/1 year.
Oil looks fine when changed

According to the OLM I could go 22 000 km.
Oil is GM LL-025A oil (Opel Synthetic 5w30).
