AS above. Just got Microsoft's new "Now With Added Cumbersome" Outlook mail interface sicked on me.

The timing is immaculate, because I've just told students to email me some assignments, which I don't normally do.

Sometimes with this sort of thing there's a "revert to classic" option which can soften the blow.

Don't suppose that's the case here?

As an educator, why wouldn't you embrace the chance to learn something new? We use Outlook 2016 (we have an Office 365 subscription) and both my wife and I find it extremely easy to use.

Are we talking about Outlook.com (AKA "Hotmail" and "Windows Live") or actual outlook (part of office suite).

Unfortunately for outlook.com - if there is a way to revert to the old version I haven't found it, though the new one isn't too bad once you get used to it.

I agree, the current "Hotmail" layout SUCKS big time. The original classic layout is so much better. I've always been a firm believer in if it aint broke don't fix it. I wish there was a way to go back to the classic layout.

going from what version of outlook to what version? I know I wasn't happy with the ribbon interface, but have gotten over it.

I did have to put the outlook app onto my iDevices, and i don't like it: the native built-in apps for mail (android, apple) worked better for email. But it does have better calendar support, which is a plus.

Because I'm a busy educator, and I don't need Microsoft to invent pointless tasks for me. I have enough pointless tasks of my own.

My impression is that this new Hotmail interface would be a pain running on new kit (I'll test it on my laptop later).

So far I've only seen it crawling on the school supplied PC which is at least 12 years old and is running an unsupported browser and operating system. I can't fix that unless I buy them a PC, and I'm not doing that.

I'll probably have to start using my laptop "unofficially", but perhaps not respond to any work-related administration emails.

Sort of back to the classic "go slow" of '70's British industrial relations.

I feel like I encountered such thoughts last time that Office was redesigned somewhat - was it the 2010 version or the one right before that?

Thankfully I never had to use outlook since 1999 in my career.

That being said I believe you can typically lighten the modern interfaces to a lighter version if poke at the options.

Office 2007 is the first version with the ribbon. I use Outlook 2013 and 2016 on my work and personal computers and haven't notice a recent change in the look of the user interface.

Although Office 2007 introduced the ribbon, which was a big change, Office 2013 did make some significant visual changes (for the worse in my opinion) from Office 2010. One was that everything seems to visually run together in 2013, another was using BLOCK CAPS all over the place as if we are back in the 1980s.

I think the OP is referring to web interface for Outlook not the windows version of client.

Just made the Office 365 mistake at work and the Outlook 16 client, yes the native client is junk. It's "pretty" but pretty awful from a usability standpoint. It sucked when it came out in 1998 and has not gotten much better over the years. Our previous groupware client, while ugly as sin was much more functional.

The "Stability" of Outlook/Skype Business is about the same too. The change was a humungous wast of money.
