Same color scheme but now the oil is *certified*. Picked some up today for this weekend and noticed the difference. Presumably the same formulation but who knows? A UOA isn't in the cards for me this OCI but maybe next time.

The new label emphasizes fuel economy (though the old oil is resource conserving too) and does not emphasize that it's "for turbocharged engines" presumably because Subaru is requiring/recommending synthetic across the board now -- but do they require 5w-30 in any non-turbo engines? I don't think so.

Looks nothing like a CP oil bottle, it has no angled channels in the bottle.

Idemitsu makes the oil. If you look closely you'll see their corporate "wind in the hair lady" logo on the back. Subaru has confirmed Idemitsu is the supplier.

It's around $7.50 per quart at my dealership which is on par with auto parts store non-sale synthetic oil prices. But due to a credit cards reward program I get it essentially free. Combined with good UOAs that's why I'll keep using it for the foreseeable future.

Current MSDS of Subaru's Syn. 5w-30 55 gallon

Of course not Europeans nor Aussies need to worry about petty fuel prices as gas is so cheap there compared to North America!

We have way higher fuel and oil prices than Smuggsville Ontario...but the 2 year old Automatic Foresters that are specced and run 5W-20 (when the bullock trains can deliver it) get the same mileage as my aged L67 Caprice (on 5W-30, 15W-40 blend at the present time).

Why do Subaru US carry an obsolete 5W-30 synthetic, when Porsche have backspecced to 0W-40, and Ford use xW-20 in trucks

I can only imagine the chaos Subaru forums would see if they back-spec'd the turbo engines to Xw-20!

I think the 5w-30 is only required for their turbo engines -- an I'm not sure about the new FB turbo. But they're not the only ones spec'ing 5w-30 in "high performance" turbo engines. The Mazda 2.3 DI Turbo and IIRC even the new 2.0 DI Turbo in the Focus ST spec 5w-30 in the US (not sure about elsewhere). Many turbo Subaru owners would be pretty happy if Subaru would allow Xw-40 in their turbo engines.

Well that only took 1.5 years!

Mitsubishi EVO X uses 5w30 synthetic as well.

But as long as they maintain adequate oil pressure, one of the Xtra High VI 20s is all that they'll ever need.

You're are of course right in principal.
That said, I've accumulated quite a bit of experience running Xtra High VI 0W-20 oils and know just how light they still are at normal operating temp's.
You may be able to maintain OP at low normal oil temp's but you would not have much viscosity reserve to deal with higher than normal oil temp's (not unusual in a turbo driven aggressively) and fuel dilution.

Obviously, if one was going to experiment with a lighter than spec' oil, installing oil gauges must be installed first.
It's unfortunate that Subaru's don't come with gauges as standard factory fitment. Running the light spec' A5/B5 5W-30 is a good place to start. The thing is many want to run a 40wt oil simply because it's a turbo engine and they have heard that track driven cars can generate high oil temp's so many do without first installing oil gauges to know whether they actually need a very much heavier (3.8cP-4.0cP HTHSV oil).

BTW, the Xtra High VI Toyota 0W-20 is now available in OZ for $49/4L jug. It's the oil that's spec'd for the Toyota 86 sportscar.
