New Jeep

Still looks just as ugly as the first time it was posted here on BITOG,

alas, it's all subjective of course.

With LED becoming more predominant and future law amendments, the headlight possibilities are endless. New MB headlights have tech that is not legal (yet) in the US. As designers adjust, we have to expect a few controversial and potentially slow selling designs to come to market.

Let's just hope that someone finds the sweet spot(s) quickly.

+1 on that!

It ought to be illegal to put the Jeep name on anything that doesn't have solid axles front and rear.

Hmmmmm. While I'm not a fan of the styling really, Iam intruiged at what they seem to have done to make it off road worthy considering all around independent suspension. Will be interesting to see.

It will be just as offroad worthy as the Compass and Patriot ...

I guess I am the only one that thinks it is really sharp looking. I can't wait to see it in person.

I'm not a fan of the general styling direction of most of the small SUV's like the Escape and now this. This is better than the Escape, but it still looks kludged together.

I know you're all going to kill me but, compared to the original pictures, this doesn't look half bad.

Which for most people and in most conditions is all they really need. If you want to go rock climbing, no it's not enough. A Patriot in a farm setting, driving through the woods, driving to hiking destinations on rocky/bumpy terrain is a good match.

Another flop. What an absolute abomination.

"Jeep’s replacement for the midsize Liberty and competitor for the likes of the Ford Escape and Honda CR-V "

Yeah - go Jeep....

Looks like they stuck a 7 slot on a Vehicross.

Chrysler couldn't make a 4 speed work ... it's scary how bad the 9 speed is going to be ...

Which is to say... almost not at all.

But lets face it, more people use "offroad capable" vehicles on-road than not. Which is why Ford gets away with a transverse-engine car-based Explorer instead of the original tough-as-nails scaled-down F-150 version, right down to the (godawful on-road) twin-I-beam suspension. Like the new watered-down Explorer, the watered-down Cherokee has a big slot in the market. But I agree, its sad to see that name put on something so much less of an offroader than the XJ, though.

At least Jeep has stated over and over that the Wrangler WILL REMAIN the offroad flagship vehicle, keeping its solid axles, high ground clearance, and ease of modification.

8.7 inches of ground clearance. Optional rear diff lock. That should get you through some snow. If the mileage and price stays decent, it looks like a good idea. I'm a die hard Ford guy, but the Escape has never enthused me.

Skeptical of the transmission. Its not so much the fact that it has nine gears, but that Chrysler is trying to design something radical. Maybe it has nine gears so you have extras when some fail?

Is this going to be a ZF transmission like the 8-speed? ZF is generally reputable, but I guess Chrysler had some design input on the current 8-speed they use.

Actually, if you throw some decent tires on them and have the FDII 4WD option the Pat and Compass are pretty capable off road. Even the FDI models do pretty well. As another member said they aren't for rock crawling but they do suprprisingly well off road. On road they are roomy, comfortable, handle winter weather with ease, and get great MPG.

Back when I bought my 2011 Jeep Patriot we went through this on here. I posted tons of photos from members of the Patriot forums I joined that showed it to be very off road capable.

You would be surprised at what a Patriot/Compass will do off road. I don't do that stuff but if I did I would not hesitate with mine.
