New FRAM High Mileage Filter with release

FRAM has a new oil filter for cars with 75,000+ miles. It apparently has a time-release gel that is housed in a plstic basket. The can looks exactly like the Extra Gaurd filter, it's just different in the middle.
Schucks has them in stock, a lot of them too.

Perhaps Fram has been reading this on this forum, and are now issuing a superior line of oil filters. So, dont condemn something we dont know anything about. Could be the best thing since FP/LC......

With that being said, I tried to find out more about it, but their website has no mention of it. And the link to the article also does not give much info. I also noticed it had a Jan 05 date to it. Will be interesting to see what this is, at what price.

You're right MAJA, but, given Frams reputation for "quality" products, I think I'm just going to sit back and let nature run it's course on that thing. Sorry, but that's just me.

Fram....almost sounds like it could be another "F word"..

We agree on reputations, but companies and reputations can turn around. Especially if they are struggling. But with Walmarts having a large selection of Fram products, I dont think Fram is struggling.

Hence, this is probably not an improvement. But it doesnt hurt to wish it could be. Lets wait and see.

The filters are out now. I saw an ad for them at the counter of a Schucks in Oregon. I then took a walk back and saw a whole shelf of them next to the regular filters.
They have filter material, but a small plastic container near the threaded end of the filter. That is where the gel additive is. The outside looks exactly like the standard Extra gaurd filter.

They were $7.99 each. And Schucks is usually a bit more expensive for FRAMS.

Not all Frams suck, the X2 isn't bad. I had some cash burning a hole in my pocket so I purchased one, I like it. It's built nice, has great media, and has metal end caps. I don't know how you can complain about it.

OK I cut open a FRAM, 3387 size. Price, at $5.89 or so. It has the carboard ends, open ended cartridge with a soft rubber ADBV. In the center it has a plastic "cage" holder containing a dark brown or black grease like substance which is the release substance. I guess it disolves over time. Overall, it hasnt improved my perception of FRAM oil filters. But again it may be adequate to do what we need it to do.

As a recovering FRAMaholic (clean for 2½ years thanks to BITOG), I am only interested in their products academically now, but it still galls me when a manufacturer introduces a new product, but doesn't mention it on their web site! How the heck hard is it to add a little blurb with some generic info until the site can be revised?! As if I needed ANOTHER reason to hate FRAM...

Well I guess the next thing to do is send some of the "gel" in for a VOA to determine what the frig the stuff really is.

But since the filter construction appears to be Fram's normal cardboard crap, I'll pass on the thing.

There was a company that is making this gel beads oil replenishments packs for fleet trucking that goes in the filter, one forum did a study on them with hot oil or examining the weight after use, I forget the actual details, but the upshot was that no discernable matial loss could be detected from the gel beads after a period of time of in service use. So I wonder if that is what is in the Fram filters. Anyway made me leary of anything claiming time release oil replenishment, especially if it had to do with gel.

I found these filters at Walmart for $5.97. I was going to cut one open, but Maja took care of that for me.

Filters are supposed to remove stuff from the oil, not add it.

The last time I bought a Fram that added anything to my oil - I found out years later that DuPont highly discouraged that substance (Teflon/PTFE) from being used in internal combustion engine applications! Gee, thanks Fram!

OK, if you arent going to cut it, are you going to use it? I can email pics to anyone if they need to see it.

Also, this "time release" agent is/are not beads, but almost like a grease, or like "Vaseline", sticky. Am not sure how it "disolves", over time.
