Hey all - long time lurker, first time poster.

My daughter has been driving a 2009 Camry (2AZ FE) since we got it for her used in 2018. I was unaware of the low tension oil ring issue until about 18 months ago. I had noticed oil consumption beyond what I expected, and finally decided to look around on the internet and discovered the Car Care Nut, who describes the 2AZ FE oil control ring issue pretty well on his YouTube channel. So I am in the middle of a "rehab" attempt that started early this year (FEB '24). I will be posting results of that rehab attempt out here in a different forum once I've got before/after measured results to report, but I saw these FRAM Ultra Syn filters (XG4386) at our local Rural King yesterday and was curious about them (see pics).

One has a date on the box of 2013 and the Fram Operations address is Perrysburg OH. The other is dated 2020 and the address is listed as Cleveland OH. Some of the other info/specs on the box vary a little (mileage "guarantee", etc).

My question for the experts: Is there a significant difference in these filters, apart from the age difference?

My plan for these filters is that they will go in the car while we are still in the "cleaning" part of the rehab operation (HPL EC, HPL, and perhaps Valvoline R&P in the future). I picked the -4386 size instead of -4967 because I figured more media would be advantageous while I am attempting to get the piston rings/ring lands cleaned. I am of course hopeful that the filters do not get overwhelmed with debris as things are potentially dissolving and breaking free from the pistons/rings. I doubt any of these intervals are going to go much past about 3000 miles, based on my daughter and son-in-law's driving habits with the car. They only put about 500 miles a month on the car.

OK, looking forward to hearing if there is any difference in these filters. I guess that may dictate when I install them on her car. I expect there are at least 3 or 4 more OCIs before I switch back to OEM filters, if I observe a measurable improvement and stabilization in the oil consumption. Also - I am curious about the potential differences between a Fram Ultra -4386 and Toyota OEM filter (YZZF1).

The address changed because Crowne Group bought out First Brands which was known as the Trico Group before that acquistion. They bought Fram (and other brands) on 7/31/14. And you have a package dated 2013.

Now onto the Fram Vs Toyota issue.. The Fram will have specs that has a finer filtration Where Toyota's last known test showed Toyota valued flow over filtration, the filtration was lower than Fram. I don't think your engine is going to be destroyed using the Fram even when you're trying to free up those low tension piston rings.

personally I like the YZZF1 filter, the quality is something you can rely on with Toyota and the price isn't bad at all! My argument is show me a toyota engine that died because of using a Toyota filter, usually they don't exist!

The older one is the OG Ultra with the wire backed media, the other one is not wire backed media. Both should work fine for the engine clean-up if you're only going to run them 3000 miles. They both have a pretty high holding capacity.

Change twice a year or 3000 with name brand oil and what grade is on the cap. The filter will not matter so much. Toyota filters seem to be clean, others maybe not. Never tested that opinion. Fresh additives, fresh clean oil would do the most.
It so happens I have a daughter with the same year and model. I was going to put Havoline 0-20 I got from walmart in six quart bag in a box. I trust chevron oils to more or less be honest with product description. Others here know a lot more on the details. Doesn’t have to be tis, but is what I bought. Gives an extra quart and a half for oil burning. Hers at 200k isn’t using much at all. The previous owner was a woman who always serviced it at the dealer. It was on the prepaid maintenance plan when new. So Toyota filters most of the way.

Sorry, - "OG" ?? Original Gangsta?

The actual definition of "OG" has been around a long time, and is used for all kinds of things when referring to the original.

Since synthetic media doesn’t break down, at least the fibers, and the valve is silicone, OGs should be around second hand but unused a long time. I have one left for my truck. Maybe ebay will be the place to find them.

That engine is a prime candidate for a Berryman's piston soak. Several of us here have completely cured or at least massively improved the oil consumption issues in our 2AZ engines using B12 Chemtool fuel system cleaner. Do a search on this site for "piston soak" and you'll find several threads.
