This past Sunday I changed the oil in my Nissan Rogue, the new filter I used was a STP S6607 from Auto Zone. I took a picture of the Kirkland 0W-20 jug and the filter before doing the job and posted it in the "Post Your Latest Oil Change" thread. Sunday night I looked at the picture again and noticed the base plate on the new filter looked different. The older style S6607 has a base plate that is more recessed into the can and is flat, not curved at all. The new design plate is convex, slopes out and away from the body of the filter and has larger inlet holes than the older style PGI/STP filter. The new base plate also puts the inlet holes a little closer to the end of the can than the older style filter. I wondered if maybe I had bought the wrong filter but the receipt shows it was an S6607. Then I wondered if the different design might cause any problems. I did drive my car about 20 miles Sunday night but there was no trouble with it at all.

I was really curious about this so today I went to Auto Zone and checked out the S6607's on the shelf. They all had this new style convex base plate. The XL6607 had it too. I even checked another filter at random, I think it was a Hyundai filter, it had the new base plate too. I am not on BITOG for nothing, so I went to the AAP up the street, they had a couple of Carquest Premium filters with the older design base plate but the CQ Premium 85358 for my Nissan had the new style base plate. I also checked a random Ford CQ Premium filter, it was the new style as well. I guess the PGI engineers definitely know what they are doing but it was kind of a shock to see this change. I am no engineer or mechanic but I don't think it will cause any problems, it looks to me like the new design may even have better oil flow than the old design. Why I never noticed the changes to the base plate as I was doing the oil change, I will never know.

This is the older style PGI base plate, the one on the left is the S6607 from my wife's Nissan, the one on the right is the CQ Premium 85358 from my Nissan. The base plates are flat with smaller holes.

PGI is not a monolithic one style fits all when it comes to their oil filters. They have many manufacturing plants split across Asia and it would be plausible that some contract runs for some private labels and their requirements would roll over to other private label brands from time to time.

I would not be sweating any of these differences.

The new design plate is convex, slopes out and away from the body of the filter ...
Only thing to worry about with a base plate like that is to ensure the base plate doesn't bottom out on the filter mounting spud on the engine before the filter it totally tight on the filter seat. I'd bet the engineers who made the change must know about that and ensured there wouldn't be an issue with the base plate change. But it would still be good to be aware of how the filter tightens down on the seat when installing. They made the base plate holes larger to make people think it will "flow more" oil ... a move to sell more filters, lol.
