This sounds a bit more engine and oil friendly and is supposed to reduce cam lobe wear.

My impression reading this article is that this method was developed mostly for the cam break in.
Yes, cam breakin with flat tappets. Roller lifters need not apply.

We use to break in new motorcycles that way. Ride to a bar, have a beer, ride to next bar, have a koolaid, etc. Best running air cooled motors around.
