Is there a credible and reliable e-mail service I can start using?

A real long story short: I changed my gmail password on January 27th.

On the 10th of February, I was informed by a monitoring service my gmail account details were seen on the "dark net." My former Time Warner e-mail account and my former LinkedIn account details were also found there, as well.

That is a long story for another thread in the future.

Google, in spite of my having visited their recovery page and providing detailed info to prove who I am, claim they cannot confirm my identity and suggested I open a new gmail account.

Screw Alpabet.

Whenever I change passwords under suspicious circumstances, I make 5-6 changes as fast as I can, ending on the password I want to keep. Has worked every time so far.

I use gmail also and it has served me well; cannot suggest anything different as I have tried many ....

That does me absolutely no good when they've locked my account and refuse to accept any information I have offered to verify I own the account.

Check out protonmail. I've decided to ditch Google also. It's a bit tough using an Android phone though.

Hushmail is another good provider, but it has its limitations. For full features and so forth, you need to pay. But, if you log on often enough and use it, and aren't sending large files, it'll be just fine. Losing your password with them, however, could be problematic.

Isn't that just rebranded Hotmail? Spam up the wazoo, but I guess you can set up spam filters.

Rebranded Hotmail?

I guess if you want to look at it that way. How about looking at it like Microsoft Email which is what Hotmail is when Microsoft bought it.

I can tell by your remarks you do not use it. There really isnt any better email then Outlook and no one gets rid of spam better either. Plus amazing filters you can set up yourself and unlimited free options with free online word etc, etc.

I use 4 Outlook Emails, 1 gmail, 1 yahoo mail. Gmail and Outlook email options are endless, since the person no longer wants gmail then he should try outlook.com, its a no brainer, its free and there is no such thing as a spam monster with outlook, not anymore then gmail. Its who you give your email to and what unknown emails you open with attachments that exposes you.

Microsoft has owned Hotmail almost since Hotmail's beginning.

I have an @hotmail.com account as well as @outlook.com alias (they are linked), but I don't use their web interface. I don't use the Gmail web interface either. I use an email client (Thunderbird) on my PC for all my email accounts.

I am just saying that by comparison, the amount of unfiltered junkmail on my Hotmail/Outlook account seems to be larger than on my Gmail accounts. YMMV.

I understand, just when you posted, based on my experience I have noticed almost no spam at all on Outlook or my old Live accounts. Maybe linking them created the issue you had.

BUT also, and I am sure you may agree being you seem to know systems, many people who get spam were subject to a worm or malicious crawler that exposed their email account. This crawler could have also got that information from any source other then your computer, very possible for email accounts exposed through hacking of businesses that have your email address.

I had this happen to one of my accounts, the others were untouched by spam, it was a live account, I use this account when ordering stuff online, someone was hacked at some point and I was getting overwhelmed with spam. TO MS credit, I just kept putting it in the spam folder for all the stuff they werent catching and its almost down to nothing once again. But this took time.

Anyway, I think for the OP, since he was looking for something other then gmail, he should certainly try out Outlook. Outlook offers way more then I ever use too, and I am not a MS fanboy, just using what is available.
What I like about Outlook is you can set rules, you can click on an email and if you wish to delete that email and any emails from which that address was from, you click "Sweep" you then have the option to sweep them all, sweep any from that email address older then 10 days, or keep only the last one.

What I dont like about Outlook, its so robust sometimes it take a few seconds to completely load. Hopefully they are still working in this.
Nothing against Gmail either, just that I have been computing for decades now and always drove me nuts allowing them to electronically scan your emails to deliver ads related to the subject matter in your email not in the email program itself..
I guess that thinking is now a lost cause, we as Americans do everything but sell our bodies for free services, our smart phones give companies information on where we are every moment of the day. *L*

I only see those targeted ads in their web interface. That is why I do not use it and use an email client instead.

Use GPG to confuse the matter.

I don't have time to confirm; but I am pretty sure there is a least one item in the Chrome Store that adds GPG functionality to Gmail and I thought that it could use your own keys.

When I've done it, I just use the Thunderbird client to access Gmail and use the local plugins. Or, I just do up the email in a text editor, cut it into the clipboard, encrypt the clipboard, and paste it. Both options let me use my keys.

That does work quite well. The clipboard and/or various right click options aren't as good with Mate's file manager as with others, but such is life. I'm not afraid of the command line, either.

I'm using Outlook Mail, and have an @msn.com account. No complaints.
