A Good, Secure & Free E-mail Provider??

I have an old, $5 per month e-mail account that I use daily & want to convert over to a secure & free one that is NOT Yahoo, Gmail or other mass provider. Don't want those as they have all the good/short/easy ones taken already. Don't want a crazy-cryptic address! Didn't convert before, because it's gonna be a DAUNTING TASK as soooooo many places have my pay one. frown It'll take a LONG time, but gotta start sometime!! So, what would be some good ones?? Thanks!

That's what I had & I moved. Want a NON-ISP one. Don't want to go thru that again if I move later.....
 
I just use gmail now and am very happy with it. Outlook might have more emails available, and avoid Yahoo like the plague, they are hacked practically weekly now.
 
I can't comment on gmx or zoho because I haven't used them, but I agree with Nick R on the Google vs Microsoft vs Yahoo products. Not only is Yahoo a big target of hackers, but their web interface is awful, and doesn't seem to improve with their revisions. Gmail and Microsoft's Outlook/Live/Hotmail aren't perfect either, but they are much much better. All these services have to be paid for somehow, either by advertising or payment from the user.
 
Gmail is NOT secure or private. Read their privacy disclosure when signing up. They actively monitor what is in your email. I would assume the same from Microsoft.

Doesn't bother me. So they use it to target a few extra computer component or motor oil ads at me. I don't have anything in my email I care if google reads.

So you're saying they read what's inside my inbox and sent private emails? I think you are a little-off target there.

People have gone to jail due to it. It isn't just for advertising and once they get a hold of it your personal security is in someone else's hands and out of your control.

Child predators and people sharing child pornography have gone to jail because of it- something I have no issue with. And if anyone truly thinks anything you put on the internet is safe, anywhere- they are being naive. Personally, there are few enough corporate entities I trust with my personal information, and google is one of the few.

There are plenty of ways to send and store secure data on the internet. It just requires some due diligence by individuals. Personally, i run my own VPN server linux box and route everything including my mobie phone data through it no matter where I am in the world. I know connections between that box and places I use for secure data transfer/storage are secure because I control the encryption at every level. And not everyone is OK with the ends-justify-the-means mentality of modern society that results in the loss of civil liberties.

Yep and yep. BTW "private emails" is an oxymoron. He's not off-target either. You should read goog's privacy statement...in full.

It's not so much that anyone "reads" it. They have computer algorithms that search for this stuff. Here is a quote from a google spokesperson regarding this specific situation. "Sadly, all Internet companies have to deal with child sexual abuse. It’s why Google actively removes illegal imagery from our services -- including search and Gmail -- and immediately reports abuse to the NCMEC. Each child sexual abuse image is given a unique digital fingerprint which enables our systems to identify those pictures, including in Gmail.
