How to transition away from Yahoo mail?

My wife and I, like many others have been having problems with Yahoo mail for some time now and we are wondering how to get away from it. I know the easy answer is to just create a new account with Gmail or another provider, but how to deal with the years of contacts and countless people/businesses and other entities that send e-mail? Is there a way to forward them?

For me, running Linux and having Thunderbird, can I run Yahoo mail through T-Bird and get better results? What about Gmail?

Lastly, is there a "preferred" e-mail provider?
 
I really like Gmail along with all the other Google pieces. Signed up for it when it was still invitation only and never looked back.

You should be able to forward within your Yahoo account to your new Gmail account. If you can't, or you find it unreliable, Gmail can actually check your Yahoo mail and pull in the messages to your Gmail inbox.
 
I'm an Outlook fan over gmail. Outlook makes contact importing pretty easy. From inside Outlook.com email, click on the arrow next to Outlook, then choose People. In the middle you'll see an option to import from a number of sources, including Yahoo.

Best thing to do is to run both in parallel for a few months. When you see an email come in to Yahoo, reply with a note saying something to the effect of, "going forward, please email me at [email protected]". If you get an email from a company/organization, immediately log onto their site and change your address in your profile.

You can also set up an auto-responder message that tells everyone what the new address is.

Gmail, Outlook.com, and GMX are all fine for personal use. I see no reason to use Thunderbird, frankly -- all three of those providers have excellent web interfaces. I dropped Thunderbird a few years ago and have been using Gmail's website exclusively.

can't speak for the Op directly, but I know My Yahoo account, and many of my contacts have all been hacked into and used to send infected spam emails to everyone in your contact list.
 
I already moved away from Yahoo mail. A while back apparently some servers went out and I did not have email service for a while. So I switched to Google. And I am glad that I did because not too long after that there was a huge security issue involving Yahoo mail.

I had to inform all of my family and friends and businesses I deal with about my new email address. That took some time.

Trouble with mobile app (not a biggie), periodically unable to delete or move e-mails, unable to read and reply.

I'm not on it enough to notice a pattern, but am on it enough to want something better.

I'm not certain with respect to Yahoo, but I do use Thunderbird to access my Gmail from my desktop, and it works very well. In any event, if you can migrate access Yahoo mail from Thunderbird (and I don't know if you can or not), Thunderbird wouldn't have all your contacts, just like Thunderbird doesn't have Gmail's contacts. Personally, that's fine by me, since the address book and whatnot can be migrated from Thunderbird on one computer (or OS installation) to another computer (or OS installation) very easily.

Sure it does. All you need to do is install the Google Contacts Add-On in Thunderbird.

Same goes for Calendar - the Google Calendar can be easily managed in Thunderbird thanks to the Lightning Add-On.

You should be able to manage your Yahoo mail in T-Bird usig IMAP, although it's not officially supported by Yahoo:

This page also describes the add-ons I mentioned earlier to allow you to manage your Google Contacts and Google Calendar through T-Bird. It works well, at least for me.
 
Running Yahoo with POP like thunderbird or a forward requires a $20/year charge. I used it for a few years as my personal email address was used for business.

I have gone to gmail and love it since 2004.

Yahoo and YMail are the pits. I use both for swapping emails with people I don't like.

GMail is easier to access things like Compose and Contacts. I have both and prefer GMail. The only downside to GMail is disabling all the things Google wants to implement, to invade our privacy.

Spending a half-hour unclicking / unchecking all that stuff worked for me.

I just yesterday emailed all the the contacts that I care about, that I was no longer using that address. That I was trying to delete the account.

That I was permanently deleting all my contacts within the account due to multiple hackings.

That I was sorry and embarrassed about all the the Spam sent from my account. Time and again.

3/4 ,of the contacts whom I sent this final email to was returned as undeliverable. They or their servers had already blocked my yahoo address.
 
WOW! Setting up Thunderbird to run g-mail as POP was super easy, even for a dunce like me!

Now I just have to move contacts and the like.
 
Yeah, I messed that up. My wife was wanting to move away from Yahoo too, so she was following in my footsteps. When she got to the part where you have to choose between IMAP and POP3, she asked the difference. I only was familiar with POP3, but told her I really didn't know the actual differences, so she went to the web and read about them. It was then I learned that I made a mistake.

Is there a way I can switch after I selected POP3?

It's my understanding from what my wife read about, that POP3 will retrieve, then delete mail from the server, where IMAP wont.

Under Preferences>Account settings>server settings, there is an option to "Leave messages on server until I delete them".

That should work well enough, so I can still access e-mail via mobile, right?
