New Castrol GTX Full Synthetic?

So is Castrol Edge. ;)

They actually have quite different formulations. HTHS viscosity values were estimated by setting the base-oil +DDI VI to ~ 130. Noack values were estimated from the CCS values, assuming similar base oils according to the MSDSs. MSDSs also show that Edge uses a larger percentage of the heaver base stock, in agreement with the calculations.

Castrol Edge 5W-30 SP:
  • HTHS viscosity: 3.05 cP
  • VII content: 4.7%
  • Base-oil viscosity at 150 °C: 2.26 cP
  • CCS: 4,660 cP
  • Noack (estimated): 10.5%
  • Ash content: 0.78%
Castrol GTX Full Synthetic 5W-30 SP:
  • HTHS viscosity: 3.25 cP
  • VII content: 7.4%
  • Base-oil viscosity at 150 °C: 2.15 cP
  • CCS: 3,900 cP
  • Noack (estimated): 12.5%
  • Ash content: 0.92%

Neither is necessarily of superior quality to the other. They are both of non-GTL Group III. GTX Full Synthetic is made from a thinner base oil with more VII added to thicken it, and it also has more ash, possibly meaning a higher TBN.
Now if I'm not mistaken with the higher Ash content can't that cause access oil accumulation inside the throttle body, air cleaner PCV etc.?

Lower ash (metal) content is better for the deposit control of intake valves with direct injection, spark plugs, oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, and gasoline particulate filter if equipped. It won't make a difference for the throttle body, air cleaner, and PCV valve. Higher ash (detergent) content may result in longer oil life and better cleaning.

Thank you..
Then how come, a lot of people rave about supertech oil amazonbasics and Kirkland signature series, by Warren distribution and they have an ash content of about 11, I think? I'm not even sure which companies actually have a low ash content..

I think you're confusing ash with volatility, all Dexos oils are 1% or less ash.

Great find. Thanks!
I'd definitely use it. I've always been more partial to the GTX sub-brand than EDGE. Nothing scientific, just good Ole nostalgia.
I have Edge 5W20 in my Ford now. The worst oil I have installed in over a decade. I might drain it out but I'm too lazy at this moment and I will give it more time.

Magnatec has been labeled Castrol GTX but with "Full Synthetic" minimised or a while.
Funny the best one I used was the original rollout, semi-synthetic, with the "scratch and feel" label

I have a Ford Edge I recently put synthetic in it for the first time, but I used Kirkland signature series synthetic 5W20 I was quite impressed. I recently used Castrol magnatec on a neighbors Rogue. How come you don't like that oil?

Engine runs rough and noisy on the Castrol Edge. Sounds defective. With Valvoline Advanced it ran smooth and quiet.
I like Magnatec, but prefer the original SS blend.
Maybe something else is going on here, But it was a step function after the oil install with black bottle Edge.
Full Disclosure: I did get a bad tank of fuel at the time just before the change. May have a dirty injector or a glazed sparkplug.
I am guessing though that the high pressure DI are less prone to clogging.

I can make suggestions through my personal experience, but I would run whats works for you.

I remember, the 10W-30 blend.

Sounds like you have a newer edge mine is a 13 with a 3.5 I was using Valvoline maxlife synthetic blend. For the first 80000 miles the original owner used Motorcraft synthetic blend. Then around 90,000 I switched it over to maxlife, just recently couple hundred miles ago, I put the Kirkland's in it, runs quieter and smoother.. it's always ran good.. it's running even better now..

That said, I would choose the Castrol Edge over the Castrol GTX Full Synthetic without hesitation. Lower VII content (= less deposits), thicker base oil (= less engine wear), lower ash content (= less deposits on valves and emissions), and lower Noack (= less oil consumption) are wins in all these aspects. The only advantages of the GTX Full Synthetic are possibly slightly better fuel economy due to higher viscosity index (VI) resulting from high VII content and slightly easier cranking at extreme cold.

They might have introduced the GTX Full Synthetic because they had an extra supply of the thinner Group III base stock (4 cSt), and they wanted to get rid of it. They probably had to add extra detergent (ash) to control the deposits caused by the grossly increased VII content required by the thinner base oil.
