Canadians - GTX Synthetic now at CT

Not earth-shattering news; but at my CT store we just got in a ‘special purchase’ of Castrol GTX Synthetic - the silver jug - for $39.99/5L if anyone wanted to try it.
What grades does it come in?

If 20w50, look on the back label and see if it’s A3/B4 approved.
That’s my new standard for lawn tractors, and far cheaper than anything with a picture of a motorcycle on the label.

So far it’s in 5W-20 and 5W-30.
It’s Castrols ‘10k’ interval oil; Edge is now rated at 20k intervals.
With how aggressively Wakefield pushes Castrol products in Canada, surprised it took soooo long to show up.

Who are the target customers?
Regular GTX API SP goes on sale for $31.99 for 5 litres, Castrol Edge $41.99 and the new synthetic GTX is only $2 cheaper at $39.99 plus tax and environmental fees.
The last regular GTX I bought from Walmart was 10w30 for $29.88 in July.

Personally, I’d buy the Euro spec Edge for $2 more than the new and improved GTX.

This is their entry level synthetic which replaced Magnatec up here. It’s not as good as Edge.
I wonder if Castrol is going to phase out their conventional GTX as often it’s competing at the same price point as many synthetic and synthetic blends?
In Canadian dollars, who’s going to pay $32 for a five litre jug of conventional GTX, when next to it on the same shelf is Mobil 1 on sale for $3 more?

Obviously here are more questions than answers.

I don’t think well-known ‘white jug’ GTX is going anywhere…too much brand recognition to give up.
Without sales, it IS cheaper than M1 or Edge or PP….so someone who refuses to chase sales will buy it.

I co to use to buy Supertech Euro 5w40 at $28 for 5 litres from Walmart. Might not be amazing stuff but it’s cheap and gets the job done.
It’s amazing enough and I’ve seen it on roll back for $17. They were sold out the other day and bought 5w40 Pennzoil Euro for $39.88. For USD$ multiply by .75, in this case $30.
When I’m not pouring Duron into my son’s 2011 5.3L with 360,000 kms of towing and off road, 5w40 Super Tech is his go to engine oil.
13,000 kms later the OLM clocks out and the dipstick is close to the add line.

I watch for sales on 30x Canadian Tire money day then cash it in on 20% money back day. That’s how I ended up with 5 pails of 15W40 T5 and 600 pounds of lawn fertilizer for free last summer.

How many people shop with their cell phones nowadays?
Enter a product see what’s on sale and who has the lowest price.

Many times I've seen both men and women standing and staring at oil there with indecision in the eyes and sometimes mild panic. Mostly women. IMHO, those customers shop based on familiar brand name and price points, sometimes they differentiate synth oil from others. Most times they needed oil change same or next day. Castrol is a big brand name. Interestingly enough, Canadian Costco sells Castrol as opposed to Mobil 1 like they do in US.

Every time I see a jug of GTX at a price point very close to the synthetics on sale up here I wonder who is buying this oil anymore? That really goes for all of the conventional oils actually.

You would not believe the number of people ‘scared’ of synthetics - ‘I’ve never run it, it will wreck my engine, no sir not buying that…’
GTX ain’t going anywhere!

I believe you. GTX 20w50 is the outlier as according to its PDF meets ACEA A3B4 as well as API SP.
That means the TBN is over 10 and SA over 1.0. Typically A3B4 approved engine oils have higher ZDDP levels as well than run of the mill SPs.
If for whatever reason you want a 20w50 for your light duty diesel, gtx would be a cost effective solution.
And, it should be perfect for lawn equipment where 20w50 is the grade best for your engine.
No need to pay for overpriced oil because it has a picture of a motorcycle on the label.

Our prayers are answered, after a long hot dry spell it’s raining cats and dogs in Ohio.
