New Carquest EP 20k Filter C&P

Opinions from the crowd.

For unimportant reasons I may need to run 2 OCI on all my rigs next go around. All would be at most 10K miles - 5K OCI max.

Should I go with this new EP or stick with the normal Carquest Premium / synthetic blend 10K rating for 2 OCI. Cost is not part of the equation. However we all know the regular premium will be solid - so I am hesitant to beta test this new model?

If cost is not a concern give it a try. I’m going to try one on my Jeep for the next oci.

If you want some headroom for comfort, and cost doesn't matter then go for the Carquest EP. Maybe you decide to do three 5K OCIs down the road for some reason, then you're set with the EP.

I never used the 3/4 extra turn method. I twist all my filters down “hand tight”. As tight as my weakened trigger-finger afflicted right hand can twist. Never had a problem.

If I were doing multiple OCI’s on the same filter, I’d want the Carquest EP. The Vietnam-made Carquest Premium filter material really does look thick and very efficient at removal of debris with likely slightly higher dp across the filter. I know it’s marketing, but I like the “engineered for higher flow” label on the EP which is not present on the Premium. :)

Could very well be the new best filter out there ! In a clean engine I’d run it for two or three 5K mile OCI’s and get your moneys with out of the filter . Also looks to be a great oil filter also for the vehicle with a hard to get to oil filter you dread changing .

Could these be more accurate details on the efficiency of Carquest EP? This new marketing material from the Premium Guard website indicates 99.5% at 25 microns? The Premium guard website seems redesigned and has this line called the “ultimate synthetic” which seems to be the basis of the Carquest EP brand? The extra .5% could mean its absolute efficiency goes down to 15 microns or so? Splitting hairs, I know.

If accurate, that could place the Carquest EP least on par, or slightly better with the efficiency of the PG EX extended life aka Carquest Premium (which PG seeme to be calling “extended protection” now). Those are the ones with the resin “blend” media, which the PG website only claims 99% 25 micron efficiency for.

Great find on the new website! Looks like PG is updating their graphics on the oil filters as well. A facelift!

From some efficiency curves I've seen for oil filters that exceed 99.5% efficiency, the difference might equate to around 4 microns.

Looks like the Purolator Boss white media.

Hopefully closer to the Fram Endurance aka Royal Purple, Amsoil EAO media than the BOSS media, but without the leaking bypass valves. If the CQEP is 99.5% at 25 microns, that potentially puts it pretty close to the Endurance/Royal Purple curve seen in yellow here, with an absolute (98.7%) efficiency somewhere around ~18 microns.

I don't think that 99.5% at 25u is going to equate to 98.7% (Absolute) at 15u. Maybe 99% @ 20u.

I thought Premium Guard Extended OCI filters always have a pink gasket?

The Carquest Extended in the photosl says "increased flow" on the box. It also says "high flow synthetic" on the box. That sounds like Wix XP and Purolator Boss. i.e. - it sounds like a rock catcher with course filtration.
Ty very much for that info!! *I'm thinking to myself* I bring my oil change to a shop....just another thing I'll worry about if they tighten the p ring gasket enough, and basically flush to the block...ugh. I can't change my own oil so it's another thing the shops can mess up on
Don't stress about it.

I don't know your model year of car or oil viscosity, but I can tell you this...

My cousin has been installing NAPA Gold (Premium Guard) filters with that new P shaped rounded gasket on my 97 Buick Park Ave, and my neighbors' 03 Honda CRV and 11 Hyundai Elantra. We didn't know the install procedure is supposed to be different than with the old school type gaskets. So he installed them the old school way. Handtight to ¾ turn past contact.

Those 3 cars have not leaked 1 drop of oil in the 6 months since he installed the new P gasket filters in the old school less tight manner. IME it's not a concern for cars that use 5w20 or 5w30.

Now if you're using oil thinner than 5w20 then it might be a valid concern. The guy in the video even said it's to keep thinner viscosities from leaking.

Also, if you don't see any drips then you're good. Put some clean cardboard under it after you park. If no drips appear within 15-30 min then it's not leaking. If it's not leaking, then it's tight enough and is getting the job done.
