At 7500-10k miles oci, I would prefer at least a synthetic oil, esp for a full year. Anyway, congrats and best wishes as you begin your military service.

Agreed. That's the first thing that jumped at me. We don't know what his credit history is, but I thought the whole reason he had his mother co-sign was to get pretty decent financing terms.

It's really sad that our servicemen are being taken to the cleaners like that.

I was going to say the same thing .. ;-)

Enjoy the Dart! I hope it provides many years of problem-free service to you.

And, thank you for serving our nation!

He is in FL. More than likely they have a contract with a local tinter to do every car on the lot.

Congrats Gumby! She's a beauty!

There was a time in my life when I had a new car every 1-2yrs. Good times.

Is that $400/mo for 72mo correct? YIKES that's one expensive Dart. I'm hoping the 72 thing was a mis-type.

I hate to say it, but most very young members of the military are usually very bad with credit, and typically get fleeced by car dealers at every opportunity. Why do you think there's no end of dealers as close as possible to military bases and barracks?

Give them $500 off, so they won't feel bad about paying nearly $8k in interest.

The only thing we don't know is if he was underwater with a loan on his truck, and that was rolled into the price of his Dart.

Nice car, bad deal.

And did I miss the part where he said he borrowed the money from a Credit Union?

I thought he has financed through the dealer.

I didn't attack OP at all, I tried to point out that most credit unions have low interest rate on new car loan, usually around 2-2.5%. All he need to do is to joint a local credit union, direct deposit his pay check and get the car loan with them. He then can save approximately $5-7k over the loan term.

Nice car! I really like them and hope they are successful in the market.

Based on what I sell that car for, and using $1500 down, and guessing on FL taxes and fees, your interest rate is about 15%. Not the worst I've seen but not great, either. It is what it is so no sense in worrying about it.

If I could make a couple suggestions as you plan for the future:

1. Absolutely make your car payments on time without fail. Same with all your other bills. Messing up your credit history now will hurt you for years and years. No mistakes here, ok?

2. Establish a relationship with USAA, Pen Fed, and/or NFCU immediately. Companies like USAA serve military folks very well and you should seriously consider doing all your personal banking with them. Having access to USAA and the others gives you a huge advantage over us civilians so def check them out ASAP.

3. Plan to re-finance the car loan in 12 mos time. I would recommend you make the minimum payment on the car loan and put any excess cash into a savings account (where????.....) to be used as a down payment at re-fi time. You will need that cash. A re-fi loan will dramatically lower your interest rate, allowing you to shorten the loan term and pay off the car quicker.

Getting a re-fi car loan in your name only takes mom off the deal and reduces her liability. In a few years if you decide to trade in the Dart, you will have a solid credit history with a highly regarded institution and will probably qualify for a low interest loan.

There are definite benefits to being in the military and I hope you take advantage of everything available to you. Thanks for your service.

Congrats!

To go along with bretfraz, I sttrongly recommend getting on board with USAA if you haven't already. They have been fantastic for me for many years, and offer many products and services.

Congrats on the new car, I can tell you are very proud of your purchase!!! And of course, thank you very much for your service.

Regarding the posters inquiring about the interest rate/loan term, you can always pay the car loan for 8-12 months and then re-finance at a lower rate, shorter term. I just did the same thing with my Prius and saved 8%. Yes, that is no mis-type. 8% interest rate savings. Also shortened the term from 60 months to 36.

Not just military, almost all young adults struggle with this. My daughter is about to graduate with top honors, and I know a promising career lies ahead for her. With this in mind though, I have had to explain to her young people with their first real job just ITCH to buy a new car to have a "I have arrived" moment, and the stealerships exploit this bigtime.

Its not about intellect, its about lack of experience and perspective. Best thing anyone can do for young people is to give them a "live debt free" Dave Ramsey book. I tell her, learn from MY mistakes, so you won't go through them.
