new Cable modem... 4x faster...Hot Dog!

or Torrent. The server side rarely have 300mbps for one client. Even if you want to use that much speed where are you getting it from?

During the early days of pandemic I realized my webex / team / zoom calls keep dropping and then finally my workplace IT helped narrow it down to my old router, not the cable modem, being too old and would drop a lot of packet upstream past 6mbps or 20mbps downstream. After replacing the router with no modem update the speed went up a lot. It was a 10 year old N router going to a 1 year old AC one, with only 50mbps DOCSIS 3.0 4x4.
so you are saying I should also replace these routers that I bought refurbished in 2015? ( for $30/ea.)

they are running DD-WRT instead of the stock firmware...
I have 2 at opposite ends of the house, the second one has the DHCP server disabled, and it's Ip is in the pool of the primary. same ssid and password on both...
it's clunky, but... it's worked for years...

Spectrum recently upgraded us lowly folks with 100Mbps internet to 400 Mbps.( still only 11 up). my existing customer owned Modem ( Arris SB6121 Refurb bought in 2017) apparently didn't support the newer speed.
did some minor research , and settled on a Refurbished Netgear CM1200 ( bought on Amazon, but Sold by Woot!) for $99

anywho, new one came today, hooked it up, self service activation portal wouldn't work, so quick support chat later... Success!
first thing i Did was run a speed test, a little over 400 down/11 up. 4x faster D/L. no higher monthly charge, just had to shell out a hundo. on equipment.
I have been running a CM1200 for a few years now. It should support up to 500 Mbps download under good conditions.

where I am, Spectrum is pretty much the only game in town ( that's worth paying for)...the small Hick town 10 mi west of me however, has Brightspeed Fiber available, All Symetrical starting at $49/mo, and for what we're paying Spectrum (for what was 100/11,and is now 400/11) if they were here we could have gig.

Yeah, isnt that sad?

In our last community of 16 years until moving last year. First it was ATT DSL, then Spectrum. Meanwhile our Electric CO-OP was promising fiber for 5 years and I waited and waited for them to FINALLY get to our community at roughly what you posted from BrightSpeed.
They never did while we were there, by the time I moved my Spectrum was getting to or near $80 a month for 300/12 service...
THe month we were closing on the sale of that house they started trenching the new fiber lines from the Electric Co-op *LOL* Oh well... good news is, in our new state of NC we have not only an electric co-op but also an internet fiber co-op and pay $57 actual payment for 300/300

They offer 500/500 and 1gb for $2 more than what you have posted. Right now they have a two year special of 1gb for $63 but then goes up to $78 and a one year special 500/500 for $50 and goes up to $67 after one year.

Almost depressing that they seem to be going the way of Spectrum type of promotions and since I just looked I see my 300/300 plan isnt shown anymore, UNLESS they know I already have it. When you see that, it's a way they work to get profits up. So even though we have a fiber co-op I dont trust them, as they are the only game in town.

We have spectrum supplied modem our own router, plan is 300mbps.

Absolutely ditch the N routers. An AX mesh system will have more throughput, band steering, and MU-MIMO. Huge difference if you have multiple simultaneous users.

I install XGS PON fiber for an ISP BTW. Haven't dealt with the Nighthawk mesh systems that much, but I know the Eero and Orbi systems do nicely.

Nah, if you are fine with what you have keep using it. I would have kept my 10 year old router if it wasn't dropping my zoom call left and right WFH. I don't need the speed otherwise.

Your theoretical speed on that wifi is 450mbps, are you getting 450mbps from your mobile device to your home computer or 400mbps on speedtest to internet?

If you are not having range problem like your bit rate in wifi is not reaching what you expect, or you have crowd issues, you are probably ok using the old router till some significant update is needed. For me that would be the dropped packet in upstream zoom call, or a downstair to upstair 2x2 mimo in 5GHz for Oculus. I was on a 2.4GHz 1x1 wifi N going to 5GHz 2x2 wifi MIMO AC, that's a huge improvement. I wouldn't go to AX though as it doesn't solve any of my problems.

400mbps speedtest
it was about 411 down right after firing up the modem.
this one i just ran.

In some places, Comcast is using "mid split" technology which allocates a lot more bandwidth on the cable for uplinks. This will require customers to replace their modems to reach a higher uplink speed. The CM1200 does not support mid split.
