Good evening!

Recently bought my new diesel truck and absolutely love it. Getting to know my owners manual and see recommended oil changes are 15k miles. My question is does that seem really long? Or am i getting old and the times have changed and it will be fine? Or should i cut it to 10k, 8k or 5k? I plan to do oil analysis in the future but wanted to know yalls thoughts. Thanks for the responses and God bless.

No, you're not getting old,....well, maybe you are, but that is a long OCI in my opinion.

These long OCI's are all about the cost of ownership over a certain period of time. They stretch these maintenance intervals out to lower the cost of ownership. It's all about business and profits. It has nothing to do with you or the engine's best interest.

Il probably drive 20k miles every year
I'd go with a 40 grade & run it 15k then. If you're towing severe duty & Ram specifies a shorter interval then go that route. Sounds like you do plenty of highway driving so it'll be fine. Sump size is sufficient for those types of intervals. Go with a "full synthetic" though if you can.

10k - if that’s 2X/year - space it out for nice weather and get a good look around under the truck …

I was thinking id use 5w40 but I saw alot of people say 10w30 is the way to go.

Whichever you choose, you’ll be fine. We’ve used both of those viscosities in the 2500’s we used pulling 2 and 3 car trailers every week. We usually did our OCI’s around 8k, but a few times, we got closer to 10k.
With that said, don’t forget your oil filter, fuel filters, and engine air filter. I found that some aftermarket engine air filters didn’t seal very good, so MOPAR engine air filters were an absolute IMO. As for the other filters, we’ve used Carquest filters without any dramas. (We were using our Advance Auto Parts account for those purchases.)
