New 2017 F-150: first oil change?

Just follow the OLM and keep it topped off. Don't change early - waste of oil. Let the oil filter do it's job. That engine will last a long time, even with abuse - and following the OLM is far from abuse.

I have a 2014 Mustang GT with the 5.0 and I changed the original oil at 4,600 miles and when the car was one year old by the manufacturer date on the door. I use the OLM or one year on my oil changes and just use 5W-20 Motorcraft oil and filter.

My fiancee's son has a 2014 F150 with the 5.0 that he bought new. He changed the original oil when the OLM said to change it and that was at almost 10,000 miles. He works for the railroad so he puts a lot of miles on this truck. The truck almost has 100,000 miles on it in less than three years and he has always changed the oil by the OLM which has always said to change it close to the 10,000 mile mark. He also uses the 5W-20 Motorcraft oil and oil filters. The truck still runs great with no noises or oil consumption problems.

I would just let the OLM do it's thing.

The truck was built Ford Tough. Let that oil in there for the duration. This thing isn't a Fiat Pop.

My plan was to do my first oil change around 2500 miles with Valvoline 5W-20, wait until 5000 miles and then start using Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W-20, and then change it every 5000 miles thereafter. I have a few very strong refrigerator magnets stuck to the oil pan near the drain plug to help keep the filter somewhat cleaner, I'll just pull them off when I drain it out and put them back when done. I just recently found out this motor has an 8 quart oil pan, I'd imagine it would take a while for that amount of oil to get pretty contaminated.

@WTD, I'm a railroader as well as your fiancée's son, so I know the lifestyle. Going on 19 years now with 18 to go. I did a lot of driving early in my career too, but luckily I live 5 minutes from the yard where I work now.
