Hey guys, I just bought a brand new 2017 Ford F-150 two weeks ago. I'm just over 400 miles now, and I would like to change the oil soon, just from "breaking it in". Is this something I should do, or am I getting too carried away? I will eventually use synthetic, but for the first oil change I'll throw some good straight Valvoline in it. If you think I should wait, when would you consider changing it?

I have a 2016 SCREW XLT Sport with a 5.0 ... I waited til 5,000 miles and changed mine... will do again at 10,000 and go with Mobil 1 Extended Performance synthetic and follow the oil minder or 10,000 miles max...

I know being patient is challenging especially when your a BITOG member but change it according to the owners manual and get a $14.00 Napa used oil analysis kit so you start a fact trial not speculation, good luck what ever you decide.
TOTO.

Many if not all new vehicles come with factory filled special break-in oil in engines. You should benefit long term if you don't change it till at least 2K miles on odometer.

I recently purchased (February 6th 2017) a 2015 F150 3.5L Ecoboost brand new with 136 miles on it at the time of purchase. The truck was delivered to the dealership October of 2015 and has been sitting on the lot ever since. I ran the factory fill to 1350 miles, and pulled a sample I'm going to send in just to see what it looks like, had a very strong fuel smell. I was concerned about the length of time the truck sat on the lot, number of starts, idle time and didn't want to run the factory fill out any longer. I went with my old stand by Mobil 1 5w30, and a Motorcraft FL500s oil filter. Maybe that was a waste of money, I don't know. For your truck I would probably run it out 3k then change but that's just me. That's what I did on my 2014 Mustang GT. Do a search and see if you can find any used oil analysis on factory fill's for a 5.0L and then make your decision.

I was told the oil from a new vehicle comes with high wear protecting oil and it is recommended to keep it until atleast 2500miles
Is this true folks?

With Hondas you want to go at least 5k+ miles. The Camry in my signature went 10k miles on the FF. Had a used oil analysis done recently at 60k miles after a 10k run and the wear metals were lower than the universal averages. The universal average were based on a run of 6600 miles.

Remember that Ford tests them for many hundreds of thousands of miles before they are sold to public. Follow their recommendation and you will be safe.

But if you just have to change it for your minds peace, wait 2500 miles of so to get benefit of the oil they placed in it

500 seems really early to me

I bought a '17 Elantra on New Years Eve. I ran the FF to 1,900 miles. 500 miles is a waste of good oil. I know it's tempting!

Your prophecy says you really trust the Ford (Found On Road Dead) vehicles w/ your life, I would say their trucks are reliable other than that you are on your own.

Now coming to their trucks they sell a F series every 8sec, I wonder how they retain residual value!!!

That's 3,942,000 trucks per year.

Yea right.

Thank you, everyone, you've all provided a wealth of information. I've never done a used oil analysis on anything I've owned, I will probably take the advice of just waiting til about 2500 to 3000 miles and change it then. I know no one would just build a motor and just throw it in a vehicle without running it and breaking it in first. Thank you all for your help.

I don't know the recommended OCI but I would do one at 3000 and the other at 4000 (all dino) and them move to full-synthetic and never look back (10K OCIs). These Ford engines are low wear and they last forever.

Ford does not do a special factory fill or break-in oil. They recommend not whipping on the engine for the first 500 (or maybe 1,000) miles...check your manual...but nothing about special oil or early oil changes. If you search the Ford truck forms, there are more than a few engines that are deep into the miles (300,000+) that have just been run on the Ford service interval.

Sounds like the first few years of the 5.0 had some quirks, but the new ones are generally rock solid. I personally don't like to keep my FF in for longer than 2,000 miles, but that's just my personal quirk. I have no facts and data to back that up. But all of my previous Fords seem to take about 20,000 miles to fully break in and the wear metals to calm down.

Go with what you want...oil changes are cheap and you won't hurt the motor by doing early changes.

Go at least 2500 miles.
It won't take long to get there and your truck will thank you.
New cars used to come with break in oil.
If you just have to mess with it I would change the filter and leave the oil alone.
Read your owners manual.
