Went to look at the new Ford Focus today with my parents, WOW!!! It is a nice vehicle that is very roomy. Mom wants one for an around town car and to drive the 100 mile trip to see family. Good choice? I was kinda shocked at the $20K price tag, for a Focus I mean. We also thought about getting an '08 or newer (Previous body style) But the new one's are so dang nice. Any opinions??

I have a 2008 2 door base model, just a bare bones car but i love it,it gets 35-36 mpg and is really a nice driving car.

I had checked the focus out a few weeks back. I was really impressed with the car itself, but when I priced it, it wasnt very far from the fusion. I think they overpriced the focus this time.

I love my 03' Focus....especially with the 2.3 Duratec engine. It has a sporty feel, good power... and gets about 27 city and 35+ highway.

Have you looked at the new Fiesta...all that I read about it says its a top-notch vehicle. Its a bit smaller than the Focus....and a little cheaper. Might be worth considering for an around town car.

I think Ford and the other manufacturers are trying to move the Focus into the premium subcompact segment, as opposed to the economy car segment.

The B-segment cars have really taken the place of the 15-20k market.

I had noticed the price jump lately, the new hyundai accent went from 10K to almost 14K, the civic and corolla seem to get more expensive every new generation. Kind of crazy that the new econobox is going to be in the 15K-18K range

Not only do the Civic and Corolla seem to get pricier, but it seems the older ones are holding their value more now, too.

Will be true of most cars.

5k beaters are not too far away...

I agree, for just a little more you can get a Fusion or really nice Sonata, Altima etc.

If you like the Focus I highly urge you to at least compare it to the new Elantra. Great mileage, roomy and a better warranty. Just food for thought.

I think with the next revision Sonata/Fusion/Altima we are going to see those cars jump in price also as they move upscale.

I drove one recently at a local dealer. This was a "bare bones" model with the dual-clutch "automatic". The car was nice but the hype I've read in the reviews made me expect more. I will say it handled nicely and was fairly quiet. My big concern with the Focus (and the Fiesta which uses the same transmission) is that dual clutch transmission. I'm hearing about some early (low mileage)failures and problems. I'd wait to see how they hold up before pulling the trigger on one.

Thanks for your replies everyone. We probably would get one within 4-6 months, so maybe I could find a used one that is a little less money, but if not, OK. And about the Fiesta, it is a nice car, but it gets the same gas mileage as the Focus and the Focus is a bit roomier. Thanks again!

They are having some issues with the new tranny, biggest one being when car is cold and you put in drive it will not move.

Had a chance to ride in a new rental Focus. Obviously I can't comment about its performance/handling from the passenger seat, but I was very impressed with its overall interior design, and I am usually really picky about interiors. Ford has done a great job there. Exterior isn't so bad either. I could easily see myself using one as a commuter car, although it sucks that the most upscale versions aren't available with manual trans.

Also, will the US be getting the sports version with a more potent engine?
