And MC just went down to $11.50 for a 5qt jug at Wal-Mart.
I'm heading to Wally's!!

BTW - MC5-20 and MC filter is the cat's whiskers!!

If I were you I would run Mobil-1 5w-20 & stick with 5K mile intervals!..........The type of driving that you do with extensive idling & WOT spurts, your engine deserves the best!....M1!!!

Since the OP doesn't like Amsoil then I'd use PP 5W20 and not worry about the few extra $ per oil change. Good luck with the new ride!

I've used both MC 5W-20 and PP 5W-20. Both are great oils. I think you would do well using either one. If I had to pick one I'd pick PP. Can't beat the price at Wallymart. Just my 2 cents.

I've used both in my Grand Marquis w/ 4.6 engine with a Motorcraft filter.

I really like the looks of the 09 F150. Might be my next vehicle. Good luck!

with that said be aware that AMSOIL was selling Synthetic oils long before the manufactures stated using it in factory fill.
In fact Amsoil was the only Synthetic oil company trolling around for customers in the 70s and 80s for $5 a quart when mineral oil was less than $1 a quart!

Incorrect. Mobil was offering CONSUMER synthetic a year after AMSOIL was. Prior to that, they were making synthetic oils for jet turbines, long before AMSOIL existed.

Fast foward 2009 now Manufactures have Synthetic oils as factory fill! Synthetics outperform minerals hand down!
Amsoil as a company is built of DEALERS, INDIVIDUALS not mass advertising from obscene profits.
We are simply AMERICANS working for ourselves selling a product that does out perform many other oils.
I have many UOA to prove this and the site sponsors here for AMSOIL have many loyal customers that purchase product due to performance and price.
Are you going to call us all Snake oil salesmen? I would tend to think that is Misleading in the least.

Gary and Pablo are both outstanding contributors to this board.

To the OP: Just use the MC 5w20 and enjoy the truck.

I agree with ya on some of your Amsoil points although I use their motorcycle oil. Why not just have the dealer do your oil changes? Motorcraft filters and oil. They usually run a coupon that includes a tire rotation.

Ford recommends 5K OCI for severe service, 7.5K for normal service. Based on my use, I choose severe.

You'll be fine with a 7500 mile interval. There's really no need to choose the severe service schedule for your conditions unless your truck idles for hours at a time. Also, the Ford 5.4 has a 7 quart sump, so the oil is probably not going to be as stressed.

Motorcraft 5W20 is a good choice. Then again, as is any 5W20 engine oil.

That's what I was thinking as well. On the Ford website, they always have a coupon for a $39.95 special for a minor service. For your truck, since the sump is seven quarts, the price is probably $6 more, but it's still a great deal.

What viscosity you should use is based on the ambient temperatures.

If ambient temperature ranges between (-) 30 Deg.C to (-) 10 Deg.C - use a 5W/20 oil.
If ambient temperature ranges between (-) 20 Deg.C to (+) 25 Deg.C - use a 10W/30 or 10W/40 oil.
If ambient temperature ranges between (-) 15 Deg.C to (+) 30 Deg.C - use a 15W/40 or 15W/50 oil.
If ambient temperature ranges between (-) 10 Deg.C to (+) 30 Deg.C - use a 20W/40 or 20W/50 oil.
If ambient temperature ranges between (-) 20 Deg.C to (-) 5 Deg.C - use a 10W oil.
If ambient temperature ranges between (-) 10 Deg.C to (-) 10 Deg.C - use a 20W oil.
If ambient temperature ranges between 0 Deg.C to (+) 30 Deg.C - use a SAE 30 oil.
If ambient temperature ranges between (+) 20 Deg.C to (+) 40 Deg.C - use a SAE 40 oil.

Since it is Diesel Engine, use any engine oil meeting atleast CI-4 specification. Select the cheapest prodct in the mkt that meets the CI-4 Specn.

Take the advice of Ford seriously on engine oil selection and drain period until the warranty. After which use my guidance.

I wouldn't complicate simplicity, use the 5W20 oil, MC is fine, PP is better. Both will work and your F-150 will last a very long time using either oil.

This is not a diesel.

In his situation I would say PP is better. Opinions vary.

I would not recommend using anything thicker than 30 cSt in a Ford petrol engine. Something on the lighter side of a 40 would work fine if the engine operates in a hot climate. But nothing thicker.

Fail. It's a 5.4L FFV motor (gasoline or E85 ethanol). SAE 40 would likely result in the motor dying in short order. As I stated in the first post, I'll be using the viscosity that Ford recommends - 5W20. I figure they have quite a few engineers who built the motor, and they probably say 5W20 for a reason.

I guess I'm old school, but I use 5-30 in my 07 Focus that Ford specs for 5-20. I called Mobil tech. and asked if M1 5-30 was OK and he said that's not a problem if It was out of warranty as the 5-20 was about CAFE.

The v8 ford motors run perfectly fine with a 40 weight. My dad's 01 f-150 ran 10w-40 for 75,000 miles (before it was totaled) and my grandparent's 97 with the 4.6 has also run 10w-40 since the first oil change and its still going strong at 155k miles.

I personally would run a 5w-30 but they are old school and believe anything under a 40 weight is too thin lol.
