Within the next 30 days, I'll have my mother-in-law's 2005 Accord with 21k miles on it. Nope, she did not croak. She will shortly be purchasing a 2010 Prius.

All dino oil changes for her once per year.

My plan (once I've reviewed the maintenance receipts) is to have a UOA performed if the current oil has at least 4k - 5k miles on it, change it out to 5w-20 dino, and add a bottle of Auto-Rx for a 2,200 mile "wash," followed by more dino for a 2,500 mile "rinse."

New coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and a new PCV valve. Follow that with a new cabin and air filter, one tankful of Gumout Regane, then use FP Plus for future re-fuels.

The kicker? The lovely 5-speed Honda auto tranny! I have an outside chance with this "highly reliable" tranny. That chance involves flushing the tranny with RLI full syn ATF, then adding a Magna-fine filter?

Whadda ya think?

will see if honda quality strikes again... Youre smart to change fluid early and often. Drive it like an old lady and your chances will be best.

I've never done this, and I'm not familiar with the Honda 5-speed transmissions. But since you mentioned it with the motor oil, and since you're going to change out the ATF, have you given any consideration to using Auto-RX in the transmission?

Again, I've never done it, and I'm not familiar with the Honda 5-speed and any aliments it may have, but I was just wondering if you had given that any thought. I'm even hesitant to bring it up b/c of the low miles on the vehicle

Well, the MIL drove it like an old lady, but I cannot promise the same.

I've never used Auto-Rx in any tranny and I doubt I'll use it in this one. My understanding is that the issue is more of the "hard parts" failing than it is accumulation of varnish, sludge, etc., that causes those trannies to fail totally.

I'm half tempted to trade that ride in on a 2010 Accord V6. I can handle two years of car payments. What's stopping me is the replacement of the 17 windows and four doors in our house.

After getting quotes from reputable contractors, those quotes look like the national debt of Peru!

Thus, it's tough to justify to the "other half" the need for a new ride when the cash register is "ca-chinging" on the home improvements.

I think I'll just be satisfied that I own a 2005 with 21k miles on it and cross my fingers with the tranny. And sock away $3,400 in the credit union for "future car related use."

I have a 2005 with 122,000 miles on it.

She should have changed out her Dino Oil every six months instead of once a year.

That's what I thought, too, but two generations back. I thought the problematic trans only went up to the 2001 or 2002 model or something like that.

03 and early 04 had problems.

05 and up have normal failure rates.

Factory fill coolant needs to be changed after 120K miles or 10 years and 60k miles/5 years thereafter. I would stick to OEM Honda blue phospate/borate free coolant.

Brake fluid every 3 years regardless of mileage.

Power steering fluid every 5 years.(Wally World sells Honda/Acura PSF for $2.47/bottle.)

PCV is good for 120K at least. Pinch the hose leading into the PCV it should make a clicking noise if still good.At 21k miles I bet it still is more than fine.

Your OEM ATF filter is good for at least 60k miles.

Magnefine is much bigger and good for at least 100k miles.

Changing things so early is a little OCDish. lol

Wow. All that car needs is an oil change with regular 5w20 dino, a drain and fill on the tranny with ATF-Z1. Use factory Honda ATF and coolant. The RLI full syn is no benefit and may change shift quality. I see no benefit unless you are in the extreme cold north, which you are not.

I also have an 05 Accord but with the 4 cyl and it has 147,000 miles on it. All dino 5w20 or 5w30 (on sale) and drain and fills on the tranny with ATF-Z1 every 20K miles or so. It runs like new, shifts like new, no leaks.

Someone throw me a bone here. What year did Honda "somewhat get it right" with their miserable ATs?

Please define "normal failure rates."

At roughly 400 miles per month? Every 2,500 miles or so for a dino oil change? C'mon! What a waste!

The P/S fluid is going, as it the brake fluid. The air filter and cabin filter get changed today. Both original from 4.5 years ago.

Does the AT have a true filter or just a mesh screen type filter?

Thanks for the input, guys! It's much appreciated.

0.2% of said cars on the road currently have transmission failure yearly, that is Honda's defenition of normal.

It has a true external filter,I have heard it is a [censored] to get to. I have changed mine on an I-4.

go to www.driveaccord.net and search for atf filter in the 7th gen and also in the maintenence forums.

True external filter.

05 and newer V6 transmissions in the TL still seem to be having some problems. Not nearly as many as the older ones though. The problems are usually torque converter related.
