Neighbour's Cat

Borrow a yappy dog.
Our dog does like to make a fuss. The pooping goes on in the front and side yards which aren't fenced. We keep our dog in the back yard where she can't bother people passing by. If we left her in the front yard she would run out when people with dogs were going by. She is actually quite friendly when she gets right up to another dog but when she's in her yard, she appears to be fierce. Dangerous for her, and not good for community relations.

Our neighbour's cat is using our flower beds as a litter box. We'd rather it didn't.

And it lies in wait and tries to catch birds in our yard. We'd rather it didn't do that either.

We've talked to the neighbour and she says she'll clean the cat poop out of our flower beds. But that isn't really the point. She's all for us chasing the cat out of our yard, and sicking the dog on it (though our dog has a heart condition and shouldn't be over-exerting). We've tried laying out prickly rose branches, vanilla, used tea bags, and a dusting of cayenne pepper.

We're thinking of getting about a pound of cayenne pepper and putting on a good layer (though we might not appreciate that when we're working on the flower beds). The cat only poops in the dry area at the back of the flower beds where we don't do any planting so I'm thinking of laying in an expanded metal grate just below the soil surface to make the digging tougher.

Without involving firearms, any other suggestions?
Even mentioning firearms with cats, etc. is a bit much.

Try one of these garden pest repellent sprinklers and the cat will learn fast to avoid your yard.

There are cat repellent products available in the big box home improvement stores. Sprinkle it in the problem areas and hope for the best. Sounds like you need neighbor repellent though.

I'm the odd ball. I love my, long gone neighbors, neglected and abandoned cat. I began feeding him and he stuck around our yard. Gone from my yard are the destructive squirrels (tree rats) and river rats that chewed on everything, including vehicle wiring.

I shot roman candles and bottle rockets NEAR cats and stray dogs and once they see a fire ball coming they panic and run. Once or twice more and they never came back. Thats more humane than using my .22.

Before any activist types report me to PETA, note I said "NEAR" not at. I am a pet owner myself but I don't have to allow stray dogs repetativly dig up my yard.

Why is it a problem? That cat will keep the rodents away, which is far more beneficial than some cat poop and possibly killed birds IMO. Why would a cat killing small birds bother you anyway? That's nature for you. Pave everything and the problem will be solved.

Edit:
I re-read the OP and he says "we" a lot, I'm pretty sure it's his wife that has an issue with this cat. I get it now, good luck.

Speaking just for myself, my cat would kill squirrels, lizards, and chickens then leave them decapitated directly on my front door welcome mat. Its not good to have to dispose of a decapitated chicken corpse repetativly. A bloody mess is a real bad look when people walk up, and wife hated it.

Pave everything? Seriously?

and some natural fertilizer..
Problem is the soil in that area is under an overhang and is very dry. The poop in question dries out and doesn't become rotted. It will remain a historical artifact as long as the house is standing.

I dug out a very small area and harvested a small box full of perfectly preserved specimens to show the neighbour.

Who wants to be working in that stuff.

We have a beautiful yard that attracts nesting song birds and hummingbirds. It's a rich hunting grounds for a cat on the prowl. We don't maintain it for the entertainment of the neighbour's cat.

I don't like digging in that soil and neither does my wife. And our gardener is none too pleased with finding well preserved poop in the soil either.

That cat wouldn't last very long if coyotes and wolves were allowed to roam. So much for letting nature taking it's course.
