neighbor vandalized my floodlight, my options?

Well.....I guess the "sensible" route is to get along with the neighbor and forgive his vandalizing, trespassing, and harassment.

After all, the OP has to do everything kindly to turn the other cheek. He might be his neighbor for years to come....and for the sake of being "neighborly".....just forgive the guy. Some people just like to break the law....no need to call the police.

The OP should also tell his frightened wife to calm down and not be scared because he's going to let it go and go talk to the neighbor. Hopefully he won't actually ask him why he has harassed, vandalized his property, and frightened his wife.

Bring him a few beers and shake hands....that's the ticket!

I'm sure all will be well then.

No the sensible thing is to not shine friggin floodlights into your neighbors' yards and windows. The OP's choices are completely independent of what the crazy neighbor is doing. We can all stipulate that the neighbor's behavior is inappropriate. That however does not give the OP license to behave similarly inappropriately. He needs to take stock of his own contributions to this.

this thread is really entertaining.
Andrew -- you're obviously in the camp in which it's o.k. to gun down the guy, or wait in an ambush to attack and injure/kill him.
shoot first, ask questions later.that'll learn 'em.risk a fistfight, a stabbing, a shooting/possibly a death -- initially, over a lighting dispute.i guess that you can't argue with logic like that.
many posters concur that the op initially caused this.then, the stupidity started.
what has the op got to lose, in trying reason FIRST? if common sense doesn't prevail, then the odds are that blood will be spilled -- over a yard lighting issue.how moronic is that?

just to clarify, I don't have a problem with gunning someone down. the difference between me and Andrew, et al in his camp, is that I need a good reason.a lighting issue is not a good reason.
how little some of you value life is what I don't understand.
but, obviously, opinions vary.
got to go. have a good night, all.

Well, maybe not so much......two reasons here....

1- We have many different walks of life here now, so you are going to get many different responses depending where they live or what they do. With 50k members, that tends to happen....

2-We didn't know the whole story until the picture came along, so they views of the other guy were quite jaded. OP just did not see it until it was pointed out....these things do happen.

I personally didn't say much because it it just lacked info somewhere, so I waited. Also watched people get carried away..wich was funny at first, then sad...

We have some very strong opinion members here, which sometimes is great, sometimes not so much. Passion here can be both a blessing and a curse....

Look through all my posts on this topic my friend. Tell me where I subscribed to "gun down" the idiot or "attack and injure/kill him"?????

Do you enjoy labeling me? Does it make it easier for you to put words into my mouth so that you can then marginalize me? How sad buddy...really sad.

The OP DID NOT "originally" cause the neighbor to trespass, vandalize, and frighten his wife. You don't read or comprehend very well.

You mention the word "reason". Don't you think being "reasonable" went out the window when the first clandestine altercation occured? Or do you think a person, after breaking that law and destroying property, deserves to be treated with "reason"?

You sound like the fella we have in the White House.

Of course people react and express varied opinions BEFORE all the facts come out. Otherwise, the board would be empty.

How and when does a person know the whole story anyway unless both sides speak? You don't.

This isn't a court of law....or even real conversation.

You expect too much....it's just a typical message board.

It actually didn't take 18 pages. Go back to page 1, second post. Several sensible suggestions in the first few pages thereafter.

Also agree after seeing the pictures the neighbor has a legitimate gripe but is not going about things the right way. Neither is the OP.

Thank you for that! Good to know someone is paying attention to my posts.

Anyway, OP. After seeing the pictures of your lights lighting up the interior of your neighbors house like it's daytime, his motivation becomes more clear.

I certainly don't condone his childish antics, but you might make an effort to not light up his house and windows such as we see in the pics. It would be the considerate thing to do. A motion detector light in that location, might be the most appropriate.

What, you think Andrew is actually a left wing bleeding heart liberal?
He doesn't seem like the type.

BC.

More marginalizing simply because of a comparative comment?

Must make life easier to place people into catagories like that.

So only "right wing wackos" think we have poor national leadership?

For the record, I'm more of a objectivist mixed with conservatism...then add a dash of libertarianism.

The POINT is that dishdude makes judgmental comments regularly. But then like's to act sanctimonious, and claim he isn't judgmental. Thus the hypocrisy.

Why do you feel the need to make it daytime at nighttime? Are you scared of the dark? Your neighbor seems like an idiot, but your lights are ridiculous.

My 2c after about two minutes of scanning the thread.

Bringing up the President in this conversation is wacko.

Hellman's mayonnaise sure is creamy.

It's not "wacko" if the correlation exists. He's an appeaser. Many will agree with that. In this thread, many seem to want to appease the vandalizing neighbor.

Get it now? Or should I have used Neville Chamberlain instead? Or is that also "wacko"?

And yes...Hellman's is indeed creamy.

Y'all are all nuts... and can all go get locked in a fridge...

Dukes Mayo is and will forever be the best. CF Sauers.

Otherwise, Win had it about right.

In the end, consider how many of the 10 commandments are about neighbors and "shooting" a neighbor, even crazy, is definitely a party-foul...

How about a Cap over the light so the beam shines only to the top of the fence?
Kind of like the 'Cut off' on Low beam headlights.

Honestly, If I had a neighbour with lights like yours, I would not be happy. But I would in the first instance talk to you about it.

This 'not talking just seems so juvenile.

OK the guy might be crazy, but if you knock on his door, you catch him off-guard. He will likely relent, or freakout completely (which he will do anyway if things are allowed to progress) At least you will be prepared, which you won't be, if HE comes to you.

For heavens sake, man-up and talk to him. get it over.
Don't spend your life

Last night, I marked a spot to re-aim the lights. My first re-aim attempt was during the daytime. I will try these tonight and post a new pic. These will have 50% less light output.

If you want good security when you are home you need a PIR sensor light that produces an audible alert inside the house when it's triggered. When you are away a cooperative neighbor can respond to an alarm faster than a monitoring company.
