What type of oil do they use in Nascar and Formula 1? Do you think that their engines running them the way they do could handle a dino?
Or is it safe to assume they use nothing but synthetic?

I agree...They likely run those engines 1 race, 2 tops. But is it possible they run a 20/50 dino in them these days? Or is the synthetic all they use?

They run synthetic only. Many qualify with 0w-5 wt oils and run 0w-30 the entire race. (Custom blended, something you can't get at the retail level.)

It's just amazing how good Mobil's worked to produce this style of racing oil and street car oil and to come up with a formulation. It's just amazing out there. I mean I've got to tell you, when I walk into the dyno room and I see my engine on the dyno turning 9800 to 10,000 rpms, right now we're working some engines that turn over 10,000, and we've got 0-weight oil in there, and I'm just sitting there watching this thing screaming on what we call the terminator, which is a dyno which we can actually run 500-mile races on it. You'll hear the engine shifting on the dyno, you'll hear it run 5 hours. And I'll ask the guy, I'll say, ''What oil we got in here?'' Well, there's four or five different blends we might play with and help experiment with Mobil with, and he says, ''Oh, that's the 0.5 weight stuff.'' I'm like, oh my gosh, and it's just going crazy.

I've heard they currently run something like a 0w5 for qualifying and 0w30 for the actual race in NASCAR.

As for Formula 1, who knows. I've read articles that say they actually formulate different oils for specific races based on projected temp and weather conditions. I suspect these custom blends are all in the 5w20 range.

I know Formula 1 uses synthetics with a lot of esters. The ester bases conduct heat better and allow them to use smaller radiators, and the parts do not wear as much.

Typical NASCAR oils viscosities. All are synthetic.

Un-restricted NASCAR Nextel Cup and Busch Series engines
50 cSt @40°C
9.1 cSt @100°C

Restrictor plate, NASCAR Nextel Cup and Busch Series engines
31 cSt @40°C
6.3 cSt @100°C

Restrictor plate NASCAR qualifying
11.5 cSt @40°C
3.8 cSt @100°C

So the thick oil here is essentially a 5w20, used in an +800HP flat tappet, pushrod pig-iron V8, turning over 9,500 rpm, with temperatures regularly above 250 degrees.

I believe NEO synthetic gear oil was very helpful in keeping the last generation of F1 gearboxes together.... at least on the Minardi team [ now Red Bull? ]

Now with the paddle shift auto trannys that shift in 30/ 1000's of a second I'm sure that very carefully engineered fluids are needed...probably all synthetic.

F1 engines are running 9000 to 20,000 rpm's and have to last 2 qualifying and 2 races.

Sounds like custom blended synthetic oil will be what they run...whether it is a special Shell syn in Ferrari, or Mobil in McLaren, or Castrol in Williams.

I think special, custom blend, trade secret blendings. Formula 1 cars are THE benchmark of autosport racing.Period! The most expensive racing cars. Nascar? Do those chicanes and parabolic turns make you *** in your pants?

Yes, but it's more difficult to make a Silk Purse out a Sow's Ear.

Shell unveils expanded range of
motorsport lubricants

Competitors can now choose a lubricant tailored to meet their specific motorsport needs with the launch of a new range of five high-performance lubricants from Shell Racing Solutions*. The range, comprising four Shell Helix Racing engine oils and a new Shell Helix Racing gear oil, has been developed to meet the specific demands of F3, rallying and sports cars among others. All will be on show at the Autosport International Show at the NEC in January 2005.

The new Shell Helix Racing lubricants are all synthetic, designed for ultimate performance, friction reduction and protection. Developed with Shell's extensive experience in motorsport around the world, from Ferrari in Formula One to Audi at Le Mans, the new products have all been tried, tested and proven in top-level motorsport.

Shell Helix Racing Engine Oil 0W-20 is a semi-synthetic lubricant developed with renowned race engine builder Mugen to meet their stringent requirements for motorsport use only. It has been optimised to
maximise engine power without increasing engine wear. The formulation exploits Shell's advanced XVHI base oils and a unique combination of performance additives.

Shell Helix Racing Engine Oil 0W-40 is a fully synthetic lubricant developed to suit high-performance competition engines especially in rallying. It is suitable for catalyst-equipped and turbo engines.

Shell Helix Racing Engine Oil 10W-60 is also fully synthetic. It has been developed for high performance racing engines in sports car and endurance racing and has been proven at racetracks around the world.

Shell Helix Racing Engine Oil 20W-40 has been developed to meet the most onerous operating conditions and is suitable for gasoline, diesel and LPG-fuelled race vehicles. It applies F1 know-how to deliver low friction with ultimate protection.

The last of the five, Shell Helix Racing Gear Oil 75W-90 is fully synthetic and delivers protection in extreme load conditions. It is ideal for use in transaxles, synchro and non-synchro manual gearboxes,
ensuring low wear, excellent shift performance and minimised losses.

Simon Dunning, Global Motorsport Lubricants Manager, Shell Racing Solutions said: "We've applied our world championship-winning know-how to all branches of motorsport.

"Our formulation team draws on expertise from F1 to the forecourt, with facilities in the US, UK, France, Germany and Japan. We work with teams and engine builders to match engine and lubricant technologies and characteristics, often contributing to the design process."

The products are now available in the UK and Ireland through Shell Racing Solutions distributors. Competitors in Ireland should contact Donegal Oil Company (+353 7491 21633, email [email protected]) and in the UK the range can be obtained from ADR Motorsport (01246 263 156, email [email protected])

No doubt those cars are awesome. Too bad the racing is ZZZzzzz...

Hmmm, so synthetics provide protection at extreme temperatures AND are a solution for insomnia.

BTW: I was wondering why I was yawning so much lately and couldn't make right turns. Maybe I'd better go dump my Mobil 1.
