Years ago there was lots of 20W-50 run in Nascar and the engines lived.
It's safe to say the engines are disposable.
My friend, who's into NASCAR, says it's synthetic and basically has to be more or less the same in each rig.

They run synthetic only. Many qualify with 0w-5 wt oils and run 0w-30 the entire race. (Custom blended, something you can't get at the retail level.)

I've heard they currently run something like a 0w5 for qualifying and 0w30 for the actual race in NASCAR.
As for Formula 1, who knows. I've read articles that say they actually formulate different oils for specific races based on projected temp and weather conditions. I suspect these custom blends are all in the 5w20 range.

I know Formula 1 uses synthetics with a lot of esters. The ester bases conduct heat better and allow them to use smaller radiators, and the parts do not wear as much.
Typical NASCAR oils viscosities. All are synthetic.

So the thick oil here is essentially a 5w20, used in an +800HP flat tappet, pushrod pig-iron V8, turning over 9,500 rpm, with temperatures regularly above 250 degrees.

I believe NEO synthetic gear oil was very helpful in keeping the last generation of F1 gearboxes together.... at least on the Minardi team [ now Red Bull? ]
Now with the paddle shift auto trannys that shift in 30/ 1000's of a second I'm sure that very carefully engineered fluids are needed...probably all synthetic.

I think special, custom blend, trade secret blendings. Formula 1 cars are THE benchmark of autosport racing.Period! The most expensive racing cars. Nascar? Do those chicanes and parabolic turns make you *** in your pants?

Go to Hendrick motorsports and read that they use 5w-30 for qulification laps and 20w-50 for races . And of course the brand is quakerstate synthetic.

And if 20w-50 is old school then why is Jimmy Johnson been so dominant the last few years? Yea, Rusty used the that old thin Mobil that problably made his dodge louder.
Hmmm, so synthetics provide protection at extreme temperatures AND are a solution for insomnia.
BTW: I was wondering why I was yawning so much lately and couldn't make right turns. Maybe I'd better go dump my Mobil 1.
