What! No mention of $0.49 Chevron in this discussion?
i dont see the need for a multigrade oil in a race engine.seems with only a few starts before they get torn apart and rebuilt that a singlegrade would get the job done better.
They're multigrade because the synthetic fluids meet those ratings without any VI modifiers or other tricks. The fluids by their nature have high viscosity indexes so a 30 weight synthetic may be a 5W-30 or 10W-30 even though it wasn't designed around the W rating.
As Rusty Wallace said, 20w-50 is old school. Nothing over a 30wt is used these days. Now some teams may have better access to better oil such as Mobil/Castrol/Shell etc. I would guess that QS uses their new Q line of 0w-17 and 3w-35 wt oils. Bottom line though is we'll never know.

Time for new blood in FOM and FIA.
As for the oil weights and other tech breakthroughs, there's so much spying in F1 that you can bet they all have a good idea what the others are up to.
p.s. I found it very insightful a few races back (Sepang?) when Matchett mentioned that Ferrari had changed Massa's engine on Saturday after an oil analysis showed possible bearing damage. I immediately thought of this board...

With F-1 running a piston stroke of 1.5 inches and 18k RPM's, who cares how thick the oil is. It's all about how long it will last.
