If you believe that, I got a bridge I'd like to sell you.

Yeah I guess Ryan Newman should have been using a 20w-50.

I find it interesting how Shell's 0w-20 is a semi-synthetic.

Last I heard on the subject, was that F1 oils are within the 20w range and are composed of primarily group 3 basestocks. Now its differant for each team...

****, I hate the time limit on editing. I should mention that the info above applies to atleast one F1 team...like I said, they are all differant.

i dont see the need for a multigrade oil in a race engine.seems with only a few starts before they get torn apart and rebuilt that a singlegrade would get the job done better.

They're multigrade because the synthetic fluids meet those ratings without any VI modifiers or other tricks. The fluids by their nature have high viscosity indexes so a 30 weight synthetic may be a 5W-30 or 10W-30 even though it wasn't designed around the W rating.

As Rusty Wallace said, 20w-50 is old school. Nothing over a 30wt is used these days. Now some teams may have better access to better oil such as Mobil/Castrol/Shell etc. I would guess that QS uses their new Q line of 0w-17 and 3w-35 wt oils. Bottom line though is we'll never know.

No doubt those cars are awesome. Too bad the racing is ZZZzzzz...

I agree. F1 can be deadly dull.

Winning races with pit strategy and few if any passes on course... etc etc. Don't get me started :-)

Why I still like the sport, I don't know.

Same here. Get rid of Max Mosley and we'll be on the right track to having an exciting series!

Time for new blood in FOM and FIA.

As for the oil weights and other tech breakthroughs, there's so much spying in F1 that you can bet they all have a good idea what the others are up to.

p.s. I found it very insightful a few races back (Sepang?) when Matchett mentioned that Ferrari had changed Massa's engine on Saturday after an oil analysis showed possible bearing damage. I immediately thought of this board...

With F-1 running a piston stroke of 1.5 inches and 18k RPM's, who cares how thick the oil is. It's all about how long it will last.
PS--They're built to last 10 feet past the finish line.

Some race car builder (Colin Chapman, Bruce McLaren or one of those) put it this way: "The perfect race car is the one that disintegrates as it crosses the finish line- anything else is overengineered."

This thread was about racing oils and I pointed out that Joe Gibbs Racing has developed their own oil blend and they are selling it to the public.

Going a bit OT, but do we really know Gibbs Racing "developed" these oils? I am willing to bet it's a private label business venture of the coach and all they may have developed was a set of specs "their" oils had to meet.
