Trying to decide which one to try in a 2013 Nissan Rogue with 45,000 miles that sees mix of city and highway driving. Both are dexos rated. Can't decide between store brand synthetic vs name brand blend. I'm limiting OCI to 5000 miles while under warranty. It's seen nothing but synthetic so far, VSP first, then PPPP, currently VSP. All bought with coupons or rebates. $3 NAPA synthetic is tempting.

I have 5w-30 Magnatec in my 2015 Xterra. Been there for about 4000 miles with no complaints. I have the V6 engine

At 5k,its whatever works. You already used Pennzoil Platinum which I think is a sure thing performance wise. Using much else might save you some coin but PP performance is hard to beat and probably enables more mpg than your getting with napa syn if you choose it. If its only 5k, just go el cheapo.

Trick question.

Buy both and mix 'em 50:50

(Just Joking, both or either will serve you well, don't mix them)

Used both, both are solid.

FYI-Synpower is made by Ashland Oil, but is NOT just re-branded Synpower. There are some differences in the base oil.

True it's not Synpower, but it does use the same base oil. Difference is additve and detergent packages. Check this thread that includes the NAPA synthetic data sheet that I posted today.

If you look at the cold cranking specs it is apparent there is a difference in the base oils as well.

I wish I had a dollar for every time I have posted this, yes the Napa syn is made by Valvoline/Ashland and it is a fine oil, but it is NOT simply rebranded Synpower.

OP, Magnatec is awesome try it you'll like it. Napa syn isn't going anywhere.

Those numbers are cold crank max. Guess they don't want to spill all the beans.

I had them email the data sheet last week. I noticed it wasn't as informative as the ones for Valvoline oils. Reminds me of some of them from Castrol.

I'm running Magnatec now in a 2003 Sierra 5.3L. I don't often buy into the notion of some oils being quieter than others but this otherwise quiet engine got even quieter. Slightly better oil pressure too.

Still a tough choice between the two. I may just surrender to Mobil 1 because of the $12 rebate. ;-)

I believe your vehicle takes 5w-30 as the factory recommended oil.

If so, the best rated motor oil for that viscosity based on "wear prevention" (which is the most important reason for motor oil) would currently be Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic, API SN and is GM dexos 1 approved.

You can get a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 for $22.XX at Walmart and then get a $12 rebate making the oil only about $2.20 a quart.

VSP has been an alternate oil of mine when I can grab on sale. If Napa is such, there is another.
It looks good on NOACK, TEOST, and suitable on HTHS.
I think some oils on this site have been really successful with buzz word marketing - reminds me too much of the additive business.

Take advantage of the NAPA oil sale that is currently in progress as you can try the Magnatec at your next OCI as I am doing 5000 OCI also and there will be many opportunities to try different brands. If you are a member of Triple AAA you can or at least I got an additional 5% off of my purchase.

+1 for Napa synthetic.

I buy it by the case when they have it for $2.99 a quart. Wife's Cherokee takes 6 quarts 5W20, gets changed between 7000-8000 miles when the oil minder is around 10%.

I don't buy that for one simple reason.....they all claim it. Mobil may be a good oil but proof is lacking in that claim. Really all current SN API oils do an excellent job in wear prevention, you wouldn't notice one from the other in that. UOA's don't tell the whole story, but if you go off that, Mobil is notorious for having higher Iron numbers than the rest......still not enough to mean much.
