I know the Platinum is on sale, but I plan to either stock up on the Gold's when THEY go on sale or get the Fram (I'm old school, so I can't believe I am even considering a Fram, but it appears they have stepped up their game).

You must be new old school, because I am old old school, as I started using Fram filters on my first car in 1959, and never stopped using them. Now I think the ultra is the best filter out there. Oh, and I never had a problem, even in the years that they were so terrible. Of course, I never went more than 2000 miles on a filter in those days.

I do something similar. I buy Fram Ultras when they are on sale on Rock Auto and Napa Golds when they are on sale usually in early April in Canada. Having said that I’m good for a few years.:)

The Napa Platinum sale is like an Ultra for the price of the gold :)

Nothing wrong with considering Fram because Honda uses them too. Even the cheap PH7317 is good for 5k and is very close to the A02.

I´m a big fan of Fram Ultras, but the Napa filters have to be solid. So many car enthusiasts run them, I doubt there is any reason not to run them. I have run them in my Mercedes for a long time until recently switching to the Fram Ultra.

Why not the NAPA Platinum? Are they not on equal playing field with the Ultra?

They both use synthetic media, that is about all that makes them "equal."

At this point I don't see how the Napa Platinum/Wix XP performs in any way that can be considered equivalent to the Fram Ultra/Titanium performancewise.

Everyone bring out their numbers in order to find the best of the best, then apply a cost factor and decide. Still, no one can say with certainty one filter will provide a longer vehicle life or whatever success is measured by. I got over 150,000 miles using Fram Extra Guards. :)

Too many people are looking at the "numbers". Pick up a good filter, change your oil and air filters, and enjoy life.

If there's space to accommodate a slightly bigger around filter, Rock Auto has the Fram Pro Synthetic (Shop version of the ultra without the grippy paint) filter model FPS3593a for only $2.42/pc, so you could buy like a dozen of them and they'd only be like $3/pc shipped.
