Here's a NAPA Gold 7356 that went 4K with Pennzoil 5w30 HM in my 3.3L Xterra. I was getting start up clatter with this combo. Nothing looked amiss, ADBV soft and even, pleats nice and even. Surprised at the amount of solids in the can, not metallic so maybe hard sludge coming off with this fill of Pennzoil High Mileage? The actual filter is tiny.

That is a lot of carbon like grit in the filter. Filter looks good though.

Yeah, you are moving some crud ... That filter element looks pretty well impacted...

Is there an oversized one that will fit that application?

I run Napa Gold on most everything cause it's easy to get and good (small town, one auto supply...). Always the quietest on start-up.

I suspect you need more filter area if you're kicking loose crud and sludge ...

So thick oil at start-up has to pass through that media. The more area, the easier it is to get through w/o going into by-pass internally

Looks fine, typical Wix/NG. Same filter I run in my Hondas, posted one in March.

As noted though, for 4k looks quite dirty/gritty in the can. Can you see down the fill hole in the Xterra?

As for start up rattle, some vehicles just more picky about the filter combo. Nothing wrong with finding one that suits it. The 7356 has worked well in the Hondas I maintain, as has every other brand.

Thanks for the pics.

I agree.

I would think that 3.3 had some 'extended OCI's' at some point in it's life....there's too much crud for a regularly serviced (OCI) motor.

The NAPA gold does look like a quality filter.

These are the first filters I've ever cut open. Actually a flapper disc on a grinder does a fabulous job, just grind on the crimp until you see the seam. All the grinding dust goes away from the filter and it doesn't smash up the can.
