Hi,

Looking at alternators, and I notice something through the lines of alternators available from NAPA. For the same alternator (no distinction made) in the same NAPA grade, they offer a "J" code and an "H" code. This was for a 98 chevy S10 pickup, which I was just looking at for the sake of seeing what alternators are available for what brands, makes and years.

Are there different grades or variants within the same part number that I should be aware of in shopping for alternators for any make or model?

Thanks for the guidance!

Look deeper in the product descriptions under application information. The J code fits the 2.2L 4 cyl, and the H code fits the 4.3l 6 cyl.

Then why do they all come up when I choose a specific engine vin code? I was anal about noise from the bearings and swapped my perfect-operating OE alternator a few years back... Makes me wonder, though I've had no issues, if I truly have the right alternator on my truck...

There should be a list on the right side of NAPAs website that you may select the engine.

On mine, the option to look by engine shows up on the left side. If you don't refine the search, all of the options come up.

Napa changed their search routine several months back stating that it will find the parts faster with less prompts. I've found that means a gigantic listing of parts that still need to be refined down to ensure you look at the right ones.
