So long story short, my wife has been religious about her oil changes. The car has always been with her and the car never consumed any noticeable amount of oil. Now it decides to... The oil change has 7500-9500 mi on it. I have hard numbers but I can't remember exactly. So all in all what I'm wondering is what should I run oil wise? Its spec'd to 5w30. Is there something that will slow the consumption? Any tricks? Thicker oil?

Could be the PCV valve.

What is the mileage on the car? What year?

Also, that is a healthy length of mileage to run an oil. Does she run ~10K oil changes regularly? On Syn or bulk tank??

If it, for example, has 300,000 miles on it, it could be stuck rings, worn rings...

More info needed. Also, did you run Dino close to 10k miles??? That would explain low oil level.

Sorry, has 110k on the clock.

And I have been running Pennzoil platinum, the natural gas stuff.

Maybe it is the Nature of the stuff, converting back to gas. kidding

The pre-cat is falling apart and the broken chunks are getting sucked back into the engine, which is ruining the cylinder walls and piston rings and making the engine consume oil. It's a common problem with the Nissan 2.5s and there was a recall for it.

You may have caught it in time, maybe not. Remove the exhaust manifold, punch out the innards of the pre-cat and reinstall the manifold and hope the consumption doesn't get worse. You might want to do a compression test first though.

Okay. Will do. Any idea on what they should be? Bring that hers is an 05 ser sentra, I'm hoping it'll be okay

I do not know about the time limit. You'd need to read the recall notice, probably somewhere on the internet. Google should find it.

There isn't anything for my year although people state its 02-05 cats that are installed on 2.5l engines.

That's your problem right there; you're not changing the oil often enough.

my 2002 altima came up with P0420 code one day (catalyst efficiency) which meant the pre cat was going bad. Ordered a header and installed it myself, fixed the problem before it started burning oil.

Then 'you may' have been one of the very few lucky ones, because when the SES light showed and corresponding code 0420 on my well maintained 03 2.5L Altima, the precat had already puked and the particulates had scored the cylinders resulting in excessive oil consumption and an terminal engine condition.

And iirc, your engine began to lose/use antifreeze mimicking the the signs of a blown head gasket. That is also a sign of failed precats damage. As the youtube may not meet bitog standards I won't post it but if one googles ....How can pre catalytic converter parts get sucked back into an engine .... and the first choice should be the yt showing this condition and the precat damage.

Having experienced precat failure personally I posted a detailed thread on the topic linked below. If interested, all one might want to to know.

And Nissan's 2.5L precat recall, a free oil and filter change, was completely bogus. It did nothing to prevent eventual precat failure and the engine terminal condition.

All that said, not saying that's the OP's issue. Without an SES light and corresponding 0420 code, may not be. Nissan also had an issue with defective piston rings and excessive oil consumption on some 2.5L, but iirc that seemed to occur early on in new ownership.
