Well, I tried the redline si-1 on my girlfriends 2000 corolla with 135K. Here are my observations.

First tank: w/si-1(8oz dose) 32.3 mpg (Also cleaned maf and replaced air filter midway).

Second tank: w/si-1 (about 3-4oz.) 31.05 mpg.

So this fuel mileage is better than the usual 28-29mpg. I thought it was because of cleaning the maf but here are the 3rd and 4th tank without the si-1

3rd: w/o 29.1 mpg

4th: w/o 27.6 mpg

I have tried the techron, Lucas, and seafoam before. the si-1 was the only one that increased the throttle response and made the car run noticably better.

These are just my observations but I thought I would share with everyone, I really like the stuff and it was only 7.99 for the bottle that treats 100(?) gallons, if used in maintenance doses.

x2 and i also like the bg products..i use also super charge 2 it is desinged to be used with every fill up. you would never have to use bg 44k ever...all their stuff has pea's in them as does redline

Here's your answer: "si-1 was the only one that increased the throttle response and made the car run noticably better"

Power output has stabilized to normal now and can be felt....sometimes the the throttle is blipped for confirmation. :)

Butt dyno needs love too

Can you say normal variation and maybe a small sample size of fuelings? Heck I've seen folks that drive 1100 miles/month spend >$60/month on fuel additives because they thought that they had a 1.5 mpg improvement 2 tanks in a row. I'm not saying that these items can't help out in a situation of neglected maintenance, poor fuel quality (i.e water, kero...etc.) or a highly modified combination but most of the time you could put an extra gallon or gallon and a half in your tank with the additive dollars and move on.

Well, that's fine if you aren't getting fuel dilution due to injector imbalance ..or worse you have one lean cylinder that's burning a hole in the piston ..or if drivability isn't suffering.

..but I do agree that total economics of anything has to be weighed for sensibility. It's dumb to spend $50 to save $12 worth of gas before you need to spend another $50.

..but I'm of the belief that fuel quality has and will continue to degrade ..and that the need for fuel treatments will continue to increase as more and more engines suffer the effects.

I used to blow this stuff off too ..but I've learned better

I don't think i'll use it every fillup( wouldn't bother me either), just saying it worked great for the corolla. I'm more excited about the improvement in the smoothness and acceleration more so than the mpg improvement.

On the other hand, we've had two more fillups- 29.8mpg and 30.1 mpg.

Overall, I'm satisfied with this product. I think I will just use it before each oil change. That or amsoil PI, haven't tried that yet.

Gary, I'd have to agree with you on fuel quality degredation. I've heard several reports of failed fuel pumps in nearly brand new vehicles (less than two years old). I query the source as to where they fill-up at and their reply is the same no matter what: the "cheapest station" or "anywhere"....the amazing thing is the cost to replace @ $700.00! Thats uncalled for. It's probably a combinatin of overall fuel quality and stations that dont replace the tank filters when indicated.

Challenger:

You might find that the bigger problem is that these same drivers let their tanks get low before refilling, which reduces the cooling to the pump since most/many are cooled by the fuel they are immersed in.

The engine should be more sensitive to "fuel quality" than a pump so I can't see how "fuel quality" alone would burn out pumps before causing operating problems with the engines in question.

I was fixing to recommend that especially for our corollas given their tempermental emission systems because API is the only additive Ive been able to find thats both o2 sensor and cat converter safe. Seafoam is not so I wont use it in my corolla anymore. I dont know about techron or lucas maybe someone else does, but is si-1 listed as safe for both? If not I wouldnt use any more of it on the corolla.

Btw these are also tricky on our corollas. What did you clean it with? I'd recommend crc maf cleaner and nothing with silicone in it. Sometimes corolla owners have had to clean them more than once to get them working right. Did you reset the ecu? If not you can pull the fuse for a couple of minutes to reset it.

Also, did she put new spark plugs in around 80k-100k? If not then she needs to. A new pcv valve has helped people too. So has a new temp stat. Both are cheap parts.

If your girlfriends Corolla is really gummed up, which it may be with 135K, I'd initiate a new plan of attack to really clean it out, get the fuel mileage back up and the oil consumption stopped:

First, do a full auto-rx treatment. If you don't want to spend that kind of money, do a quick solvent flush with Pyrol or BG Quick clean. In addition, get yet another bottle of Redline SI-1 and dump the whole thing in the tank.

After a fresh oil change, then start checking fuel mileage. I think you'll be surprised how much better it will be, and it will stay better for a long time since the engine will be clean.

Don't know why you continue claiming this, but all fuel additives are O2 safe.

Directly from Seafoam's website:

* Cleans fuel injectors
* Cleans carburetor jets
* Cleans carbon
* Stabilizes fuels
* Upper cylinder lube
* Removes moisture in fuel
* De-icer
* Frees sticky lifters
* Frees sticky rings
* Removes moisture in oil
* Cleans P.C.V. systems
* Cleans catalytic converter odors
* Oxygen sensor safe

From Gumout's website:

No, when used as directed, Gumout® Fuel Additives will not degrade or harm oxygen sensors, catalytic converters, hoses, fuel lines or fuel level sensors.

Drew I said both o2 sensor and cat converter safe. If pyrol or bg quick clean are not safe for both then you could very well be making things worse for him by recommending those instead of helping him. Our corollas are tempermental with emissions and cat converters unfortunately have to be replaced often because of it especially on these older models so we need all the help we can get which is why its best to only recommend something thats proven safe for both not just the o2's.

EDIT: Thats good it says on their website that gumout is safe for both but on the seafoam can it only says o2 safe and rule of thumb is to get something labeled safe on the can for both.

Yes, I used the crc maf cleaner and reset the ecu. The Pcv valve was changed 15K ago, the plugs about 20K.

I didn't know about cleaning the maf again though, I'm going to have to get right on that.

Btw is anyone else seeing red lines underlining the text all thru this thread or is it just on my computer? Its only in this thread for me, not any others.
