I've already bought the TRD Pro oil filter which is a media glass over the traditional paper style. Are these 3.5 engines pretty hard on oil being direct injection?

Nice color I have a 4Runner with it.

No need to run trd oil filter. The stock filters are great.
The question on oil intervals is how do you drive it?
If it is severe service 5k-6mo if it is normal 10k-12 mo

I run factory fill to 5k 6mo(severe service) and change with a synthetic 5w30to 0w40 for summer. Then I use toyota care to replace the filter and change the oil at 10k. Basically I run their bulk 0w20 in winter and without a filter change drain and add something a little more robust for Texas summers.

if the free dealer oci's fit your schedule start there then I'd experiment all the way to 15/40 to find the sweet spot...you may be surprised.

Awesome! Those are built like a tank and reliable. Can't go wrong with TGMO or IdeMitsu. However; any off the shelf oil that meets the spec will suffice. Those engines are not hard on oil. If money is plentiful, Redline is a great oil. Don't forget about warranty and it's specifications.

Congrads!

Thanks. I would love to use the Toyota care but I'm always worried that the person that will be changing the oil will not care and possibly mess something up thinking about their date are whatever it is that's on their mind. When I was in high school I worked at a dealership and saw the guys that were doing the oil changes and quick jobs. They didn't give me the warm and fuzzy.

I bought some 0w 20 Valvoline Advanced today on rollback. Figured for 23 bucks it was a bargain. I agree with the general consensus that while the Royal Purple is a good oil I just don't think it's justified by being twice the amount especially there a API licensed oil.

Most dealership lube areas have observation areas now. I sit and drink coffee and watch them. They seriously use torque wrenches when they rotate the tires and take special care when I have been. If they don't have an observation area I don't go though.
They use hand tools for the aluminum skid plates and the drain plug, (I make sure to tell them to) and set the skid plates on shop rags so not to mar it up. On my old FJ they would do 5 tire rotation for me etc. you just need to tell them exactly how you want the service performed. Then you want to verify/check the work.i have never once had a damaged plug, skid plate or leaky filter. Well once I found a marrred up skid plate bolt on a 2010 runner and that's when I started requiring hand tools. You can cross thread real easy with an air wrench.

Of course you don't have to but it is nice to have an established relationship, even if you modify, wheel and do some of your own maintenance, they will know you know the truck,

That's a great looking truck!

Yes but are they going to really use TGMO or bulk oil? I suspect most dealer service will use the bulk. Does it specify that TGMO must be used? Should get it in writing.

They use bulk oil which works fine. Toyota pays for the service and the dealership has to set the specifications. That is it. They reach out to,the local distributor to get the best deal that can on the spec oil.

It can be anything of the spec. My dealer when I lived in Durango for toyota care (combo Ford Dealer) used Motorcraft 0w20 semi sun. it performed fine, for the many year long intervals I ran it in my 2010 FJ cruiser.

Some people think that when you go to a dealer for an oil change, a gentleman in a lab coat is carefully opening individual bottles of TGMO just for your car.

In reality, it's some kid who smells like smoke with a scorpion tattoo on his neck who pumps an unknown quantity of bulk oil into the motor after he installed your drain plug with an Ingersoll Rand impact wrench.

Awesome truck by the way!

Nice truck! I have Tundra with the 5.7. I say go through the Toyota care first. I would then go with either Redline 0W20 or any good full synthetic 0W30. I went with Redline 0w20 which is like a light 30wt. HTHS is 2.9. Gas sucks on the 5.7 so every little bit helps plus I tow and I have had great results with Redline oil. It is expensive but I change my own oil so what I save on labor makes up for it.

You have officially wrote a paragraph which stated nothing but nonsense. You deserve a cookie.

OP if that engine does not make it to 200K on current API oil at OCI'S covered in your owners manual then nothing you do will help it get there.

So I decided to run the Castrol 0w 20 Edge. Does anyone have a good UOA or VOA of this oil?

Congratulations! I picked up a 2019 TRD OR last Wednesday. I'm pretty excited.

I'm disappointed to find that shop manuals are not available for these trucks. Not having shop manuals will be a first for me. Anybody have a lead on manuals of any kind from Toyota?

Thanks. I certainly love mine huge upgrade from a Jeep Wrangler JK. Hard to go wrong with a Toyota really any Asian vehicle for that matter.

I think I'll probably skip the oil filter though. The plan is to change out the front differential and transfer case by 5k miles. I'll probably use the 2 years of free toyota care for 5k OCIs, starting at 5k. I may or may not use Xw-30 in the future.

Did you go with an automatic or a manual? Unfortunately, even checking the fluid level on the automatic transmission is a complete nightmare. Between that and it not wanting to let the engine rev up at all, I'm starting to wish I'd gone with a manual. I love everything else about this truck though.

Does anyone know how many accessible grease points there are on this truck? Could I just use the Schaeffer 211 #2, 3% Mo, Al-complex grease I use for everything else, or should I get something application specific?

Oh... here's a good laugh for everyone. I crushed bed light on the back of the cab with my tractor loader the other day. I got a quote from a well regarded body shop... $1400. They say they have to drop the headliner and it's a whole lot of labor. I think I'm just going to get it done and forget it ever happened.

You not going to prolong the life of the truck by changing the oil early. Run the factory fill till it's time to change.

If your truck recommends 0w20 id use the Castrol or any major brand syn 0w20. Depends what you prefer and are willing to spend.. i personally have a preference for Pennz Ultra and M1 AFE. But im sure the others will do just as well! Welcome to Bitog and please do share more pics! (Interior pics would be coo!) Nice truck!

Sorry it took so long. Here are some interior shots.

Congratulations on a great truck. I'm at 206K on my 2007 Tacoma PreRunner TRD Off-Road 4.0/automatic that I bought new in June 2007, and still haven't had to replace a major component. Only very minor things like a u-joint, idler pulley, digital overhead temp display/compass had to have a solder joint repaired, center console latch broke, and I just only a couple of weeks ago had my first wheel speed sensor go out (ordered 2 new ones on eBay for...$12).

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-30/Fram Ultra @ 10K intervals and it uses no oil. Matter of fact it's never had anything but Mobil 1 in the crankcase since I did its first oil change.

I've done 2 complete tranny fluid swaps using the OEM fluid - once at 100K and again at 200K and the transmission still shifts great.

Mobil 1 in the diff as well.

Only on 3rd set of pads and 2nd set of shoes since new.

Air blows cold, heat's hot, never needed an alignment... I could go on.

Gas mileage is dismal. I drive fast (like 75-90 mph usually) so I get like 15-16 MPG.

Thanks. My brother had one that was the first gen and I know it was abused and it's still managed to make three hundred thousand miles that we know of. Always was a Jeep person but now that I've driven a Tacoma I don't think I would drive anything else. Like you said they are just very well made vehicles.
