Scam; the formatting and text is very similar to those I received when shopping for an ATV.

^ never respond to something like this,

Read into what they are saying and asking - it should be very obvious to spot.

Never in the text of any emails did the "buyer" allude to it being a boat.

If one is replying to a CL ad, and using a cell phone or whatever, and just says "still 4 sale?" I delete that response without prejudice.

When I respond, I include my name, city, and what attribute about what particular item I'm interested in.

so should i respond at all at this point?
what would happen if i sent my name, address, and phone number?
I've already sent my phone number, and if you were to put that in google you get my name and address.

That is epic failure. This is a phishing scam.

lol, you need to determine if he's Nigerian royalty first.

Craigslist is nice, you just have to keep in mind thought that a certain fraction is going to be spam and scam.

These aren't boom times, try lowering the price and putting up good pics to get more legitimate responses.

Could also be the infamous overpayment scam where they overpay you with a fraudulent check and want the overpayment paid back.

I can't believe people fall for this [censored]. When you sell something on Craigslist, only deal with local people who sound legit.

Definitely a scam, I received about 30 of these while trying to sell my laptop. Craigslist also warns of this:

http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams

Do not deal with them, ignore them. Deal with people who request photos, want to meet to see it and want to pay cash. If you deal with a check, when meeting in person, contact their bank and ask for a verification of funds. If there is a local branch near by, both of you goto the bank, have them withdraw the funds and do the exchange. NEVER blindly take a check/money order!

Most people these days are scheisty.

Yup! I agree with what all these posters said RE: a scam.

My response to this guy/gal is that: " It's first-come-first-serve basis ONLY No other alternatives to be considered..."

*alternatively, ignore this email entirely and he will go away*

That will do the trick.

if you are concerned about hassle you might reply again and tell him that alas, it SOLD today and the new owner now has possession and has towed it far away - paid cash. This reveals no new useful information and keeps from annoying him. And yes, it sure sounds scam to me, too.

I understand it's a scam.
my question is if anyone knows, what would most likely happen if i responded with my name and address. what do they do then?

I really don't have a good answer for you, but that much personally identifiable information in the hands of a scammer can't be good.

Contact all three of the credit reporting agencies and put a credit freeze on your account with each of them. The price varies depending on your state, but expect an average of around $10 per agency. This will give you protection from anyone trying to open a line of credit in your name. And it is a heck of a lot cheaper than using one of the credit protection agencies that charge you each month.

Be sure to save the pass words you generate in several locations where there is no chance you will loose them.

Find out which of these agencies your bank uses for checking your credit card renewal of your credit card, and for loans, and in the future when it comes time to renew your credit card you will have to temporarily remove the freeze for a week or so, so the bank can access you credit rating. This may or may not cost you each time (about ten dollars once every two years, if there is a charge).

If you think that someone might be legitimate and want to buy your boat sight unseen, ask them for a bank draft. It only cost them a few dollars, and if they are serious, they will do it, if they are a scam they will come up with some excuse why they do not want to do a bank draft.
