First became aware of the BITOG forums a couple of years ago and couldnt get enough of them. When I first started reading it I was amazed at how much I didnt know about automotive fluids, even though I am an ASE Master Certified tech. Learned alot by just looking around and reading. I was checking the site daily and reading all I could.

But then I came to a point where I just stopped. No more BITOG. Why? Obsession over automotive fluids became overload to me. The way I see it, if you change the fluids often with quality products, wax it once in awhile, and dont beat the bejesus out of it, you're pretty much golden. Maintain it well and its going to last a long time.

But really how long do you want it to last anyway? Do you want to drive the same old sedan for the next twenty years? Unless its a classic, I don't see the point in trying to keep it perfect forever. Besides, who doesn't like new stuff once in awhile? Newer cars have more gadgets inside, get better gas mileage, are safer, etc etc. Always something newer and better that you wish you could be driving instead. On top of that, trying to keep a car perfect is a battle you will ultimately lose. Rust, mechanical wear and tear, dents, scrapes, heat, sun, rocks, salt, are all conspiring to defeat your car. And they always win.

So to me, spending 5 hours on a Saturday dinking around looking for some obscure fluid at 10 parts stores is a waste of my time. My car will die or break or rust eventually, synthetic fluid changes at 5K irregardless. Not saying maintaining it is a lost venture, just that there has to be a line somewhere. I came to the realization that longevity of cars is more dependent on the way the car was engineered than micro managing the maintenance routine. Some people only change oil and brake pads and still get em to run forever. Some do all the services and they end up as junk. Doing something like putting Mobil 1 ATF in your Acura TL transmission, that is prone to failure anyway, is not going to help anything. GOOD FLUIDS WILL NOT MAKE UP FOR POOR ENGINEERING. Repeat that mantra often.

Okay, enough ranting. Not trying to rip on any of you for your love of BITOG and the subjects that are within, was just thinking out loud about my personal thoughts on car maintenance.

Well, yeah. I take this same stance against top-end cars. Take an A4 vs S4. The S4 costs twice as much but the doors will ding, paint scratch and chip, window regs will die...brakes and AC croak....all at the same rate as a base A4. So, for the same money as an S4 you could own a Base A4 now and buy another 5 years later whenthe replacment model comes out. That will extend the period you are in warranty double too. A much better deal. Lower costs of operating/depreciation over that period too. The exception is maybe someone who drives only 5000-10000 miles a year...get any car you want then. My Acura costs $18,600 new, no sweat when I get a stone chip and I'm not married to the car if I want a new one.

As for oil OCD, I think most any oil will work in any non-turbo car, just changed at the correct interval. Knowing when to service the oil and to keep it topped full is 90% of the battle.

The way I do it is first select how OFTEN you want oil service and pick an oil that allows you to go the miles ANTICIPATED in that time under the conditions expected. Done. Extended OCIs to justify the extra cost of synthetic is koo-koo. Dino at 2-3-4 times a year covers 99% of drivers. Do you need 3,4 or 6 month change intervals??? Done.

While this is fundamentally true, IMHO, prie of ownership is the key to a long lasting vehicle. The difference between a vehicle that lasts a LONG time and one that does not is how the owner respects said vehicle. One cannot reasonably think that the best vehicle in the world will last forever if the owner pushes it too hard and runs it into the ground by their driving style... similarly, take transmissions, some drivers can push 200k+ out of some of these 'weak' issue-bound transmissions that the bulk of people only get 60-80k out of. It is doubtful that it is a diamond in the rough effect, but rather a pride and respect in ownership.

I probably could have posted something a little more appropriate; that could easily be interpreted in a way other than was intended. I apologize.

FWIW, I really am happy for you.

The biggest reason there is even a market for the S4 is because it accelrates and handles at least twice as well as an A4. Most people will buy as much luxury and performance as they can afford, and thankfully carmakers know this, or we'd all be driving the exact same car.
