Well, I am a member of a site for Chryco cars called Allpar, and today I was reading a thread where this one guy absolutely was trashing Bob and BITOG.

quote:

To be honest I've used the [lucas]oil stabilizer about 4 years now and it hasn't ruined my engine. That bobistheoilguy site isn't too accurate. He is nothing but an Amsoil preacher. Amsoil is a great product but that guy is just weird. He goes out of his way to make contraptions to bash other products. He had some problems with someone before anyway and was banned from a forum or few and threatened with law suits. Plus just go to a truck stop and ask some of the truckers with 800k miles on their semis about Lucas oils. And as far as it foaming I run my engine up to complete warm temperatures then pull the oil drain plug. My oil with lucas comes out looking the same as regular oil. No foam. I only use it because my engine has 157k on it and sounds like it without it.

So, after taking a minute to calm down a little, I fired off the following:

quote:

Keith, if you actually read anything from the BITOG site, Bob is a Schaeffer's products "preacher", and then still he is not really that.

As to the accuracy of the site, there are physicists, mechanics, scientists, lube engineers, oil tribologists, dealers, and normal people there. BITOG is one of the few places you can go to actually learn something about car fluids, and have the data be accurate, as some of the key members are a part of the manufacture and/or design of the fluids you use.

Bob is very curious about oil and all of the other auto fluids, and this is why he makes these "contraptions". He is not trying to "bash" other products, merely test their legitimacy. Besides, what is wrong with having curiosity about what goes into your car, as it is a big investment, and something you want to keep safe while you have it, and would like it to last??

I do not know for certain the issues about the forum or law suits, but knowing him, I would seriously doubt it.

As for the Lucas products, their use in Semis has little to do with their use in normal vehicles, as they see much different uses, and are designed very differently.

As for your use of Lucas products foaming, your test is not going to give you anything accurate, as foam rises to the top of whatever fluid it is in, and you are draining the fluid first from the bottom. Of course you are going to see normal looking oil, because the foam will stick to the sides and bottom of your oil pan, since it will not come out with the oil...

As to whether it works or not, I have no opinion. I have found products that I am happy with, and do not need to criticize others without provocation.

Maybe next time you can get your facts straight before you go in swinging...

If there are any other people here who are members of Allpar, go read the post at http://www.allpar.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=29699 , and go give that guy an attitude check!!!

Good post DJStillman.

Bob's test was great. The thing about Bob's test is that it was simply a more realistic version of the "smoke and mirrors" Lucas display that is found on the front counters of many automotive parts stores. Maybe the Lucas isn't harming those trucks, but what that Lucas display shows is no reflection of reality, while Bob's test displayed what can possibly happen when you add something that may or may not be properly designed for your specific application.
There are plenty of truckers that also have 800K miles without the additives.

Anybody who has actually checked out the bobistheoilguy.com web site knows that Bob is not an Amsoil dealer. Bob as far as I know is a Schaeffer's dealer. But Schaffer's Oil Company does not support the site any more. Bob is very objective and open minded, and the testing of products that has taken place by either Bob or members of the web site seems to me to be very fair. I think I would trust the opinions of Bob, Molekule, Terry and others at this site before I would trust the opinions of a lot of people at other web sites.

The poster you replied to didn't sound particularly credible, I doubt if he did BITOG much harm. Your reply was much more credible, and did justice to our site.

As Patman says, Thanks! Unfortunately you're always going to get some blowhard on every site who thinks they know everything. With internet sites it's just the "nature of the beast". I belong to Ford Truck World and have seen plenty of blowhards. I've also gotten converts to BITOG from that site. Now other people on the site will refer to BITOG as the site to go to for lubrication matters

im not too sure about that. with the exception of molekule,(i do not think he sells things here?) all the rest of them are giving you their opinions and also trying to sell their product or service. it is difficult to trust someones opinion who is asking for money.
im not calling them used car salesmen or anything though.

If you read enough posts or dig through the archives, you can separate the salesmen from the independant sources of information.

On this site, the salesmen are also good sources of information, you just have to aware of what they are selling and adjust your interpretation of what they recommend based on that.

Bob never even says he is 100% unbiased and without Schaefer's in the forefront. We all know where he is coming from.

SOME of Bob's tests are a bit homespun and hokey. It used to get me angry, because some of the first people to poke fun at Amsoil's tests would say Bob's are good....

The main good thing about Bob is the fact that he is good people. You can TALK to him. Oh he's stubborn, and smooth, but you can work it out with him. WE all have biases, but the site seems to be the BEST lube discussion site out there. What XS650 says is spot on.

I saw one of these the other day. The guy in front of my turned the thing and went "Wow that really does work". Later I spun it quickly and it foamed in the display.
