how does your bank know if your debit card was stolen if you don't? surely you would have seen the purchase history and informed them, right?
Often the merchant will let them know if they lose a laptop with 20,000 credit card numbers.
Funny story, wifey lost our common credit cards so I had to cancel the cards. This shut off my online banking, so I couldn't monitor my own account for fraud. Go team!
